Premier League Trophy Visits Primary Schools League

Children participating in the Leicester City Primary Schools Football League were paid a special visit by the Premier League trophy this month as they continue their football development.

In partnership with the Harrison Murray Estate Agency and the LCFC Community Trust, the Primary Schools League includes teams from 60 city schools, with 10 children from each competing against each other in eight highly-competitive divisional pools.

Once the preliminary stages have been wrapped up, matches from the quarter-finals onwards will take place at Leicester City Football Club – giving the young footballers the opportunity to fulfil their dream and play at the home of the Club many of whom support.

With the LCFC Community Trust coaches in attendance, the star performers from the tournament could also end up on the Leicester City Academy’s Player Pathway - with over 600 in contention to be spotted by Trust coaches.

LCFC Community Trust Senior Football Development Officer Matthew Wilcock said: “With over 600 children participating in the Primary Schools League, this is a fantastic opportunity for them to develop their skills during a crucial point of their development.

“It is also a chance to progress on the LCFC Player Pathway and the finalists will play at either King Power Stadium of the Club’s training ground at Belvoir Drive. This is the continuation of a project that has run for many years now with us now having 60 city schools signed up.

“Over the course of time we have seen some exceptionally talented young footballers and seeing the Premier League trophy will give them another source of motivation to fulfil their dreams.”

LDSFA secretary Tim Foster added: “I am delighted that the partnership between the schools’ football league, LCFC and our centralised venues is enabling so many young people to enjoy high quality football each week.”

Meanwhile, Wayne Allsopp, a LDSFA Committee Member, said: “We are extremely grateful for the use of the fantastic facilities at Aylestone Leisure Centre, Judgemeadow and New College Leicester.

“These state of the art venues across the City provide excellent central locations allowing all the Primary Schools in the City to take part. In the 3 years of the league it has gone from strength to strength with more teams joining each year.

“With plans being drawn up to build on the success of the Primary Schools League in the future then grassroots school based football is looking extremely healthy in Leicester.”
