Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri revealed that Kasper Schmeichel will undergo routine surgery this week, but does not expect the Danish goalkeeper to be absent for long.
City’s no.1 was in obvious discomfort during the second half of Saturday’s Premier League win over Swansea City and was replaced by Ron-Robert Zieler just short of the hour-mark.
But Ranieri told the media post-match that Schmeichel was already due to go under the knife on Monday, having been playing through the pain barrier in recent weeks.
“He played in the last month with a little hernia,” Ranieri said in his post-match press conference. “On Monday, he will have an operation.
“Four or five days and he will be ready for the next match, but it was in the programme for him.
“We wanted him to play and he wanted to play but, after he felt something, we had to make a change.”
Schmeichel has been a mainstay in the City side over the last five years, making 223 appearances for the Foxes, and played every game of the Foxes’ Premier League winning campaign last term.
Following the forthcoming international break, Leicester resume Premier League action on 10 September with a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.
