Shakespeare: Passion, Aggression, Desire

Craig Shakespeare has put the 3-1 success over Hull City down to “passion, aggression and desire” after Leicester City sealed their second victory in six days on Saturday afternoon.

- Christian Fuchs, Riyad Mahrez and a Tom Huddlestone own goal proved to be the difference

- Shakespeare says their recent success is a testament to their hard work on the training pitch

The Foxes, previously without a Premier League win in 2017, are now five points clear of the bottom three having seen off Liverpool on Monday night and they now have 10 days to prepare for the visit of Sevilla in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie later this month.

Strikes by Christian Fuchs and Riyad Mahrez, plus an own goal from Tom Huddlestone, were enough for City to cancel out a Sam Clucas opener at King Power Stadium with caretaker manager Shakespeare sticking with the same starting XI who performed so admirably just six days previously.

“The resilience they showed after going behind, to bounce back, was very pleasing in an entirely different type of game to the one against Liverpool,” he told at full-time. “We knew that, we spoke about it. We had to have calm heads and still play with passion, aggression and desire.

We showed a will and commitment to win in abundance. They did that to a man on Monday night and did so again tonight. We know teams are not going to come here and lie down. They’re going to counter-attack or play through us, but we’ve defended very resiliently today.

Shakespeare says he was pleased to see Mahrez return to scoring ways but stressed caution from all of his players ahead of the final 11 matches of the season. The Algerian international danced on the edge of the Hull penalty area before picking his spot beyond Eldin Jakupović in the 59th minute.

He added: “I’m pleased for Riyad and what a great goal as well. He must have made seven cutbacks and to score with his weaker foot is very pleasing for him. It was vitally important for us to put some points on the board. We know it’s tight down there and there will probably be twists and turns between now and the end of the season.

“We have to make sure that the momentum is with us. It is only two games and there are 11 left.”
