Craig Shakespeare urged his Leicester City side to rise to the challenge with their UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final in the balance after a 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid at Vicente Calderon.

The Foxes fell to a controversial first half penalty from Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, after Marc Albrighton brought the Frenchman down on the edge of the box, with City left protesting that it could have been outside.

Despite the goal, City defended brilliantly on the night and head to King Power Stadium on Tuesday night with just a one-goal deficit to overturn in the hope of reaching the last four.

Shakespeare’s side came from a goal down against Sevilla in the last-16 with a sensational home display and he’s eager for them to learn from Wednesday night’s defeat against an opponent who have reached the final in two of the last three seasons.

“We are still alive and want to stay in it,” said Shakespeare. “We still have a challenge ahead against a very good team. We know it is bound to be a very difficult return match, but we have very good record at King Power Stadium.

“Our fans enjoy these nights, but we have to create more chances and attack more than we did tonight. We are aware of what we need to do for the second-leg.

“There are always moments in any game in terms of momentum. We knew it would be a frantic start, but grew in game.

“We had to change at half time because Griezmann getting between the lines, but in terms of endeavour, I thought we were exceptional.

“Atletico are a very good team, their work ethic is exceptional. We know we have to be more open because we need a goal and one of their pluses is their ability on the counter-attack.

They will head into that second leg without the services of defender Robert Huth, who is suspended after picking up a third yellow card in the competition, while skipper Wes Morgan remains out for the time being.

“It’s a blow,” Shakespeare said of Huth’s suspension. We have a few on yellows, knew it was a tightrope. Robert is a very committed player.

“There is some hope with Morgan. He has been out on the grass for the last few days and we hope he will be all right. But honestly it is touch and go and we’ll have to look at team shape over the next few days.”
