Cain Strikes In Walsall Win

Leicester City Development Squad midfielder Michael Cain was again on the score sheet as Walsall beat Colchester United 2-0 in League 1 on Saturday.

Cain’s third strike for the Saddlers came on 75 minutes, adding to Anthony Forde’s first-half goal, and in turn moving Walsall up to 14th in the table.
Now with three goals in 19 appearances for Dean Smith’s men, and scoring for a second consecutive game having netted against Scunthorpe last time out, Cain has been instrumental in Walsall's good run of results.
The talented central-midfielder could face the mouth-watering prospect of playing at Wembley in the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Sunday 22 March, but must first help his side see off Preston North End on Tuesday 27 January.
Walsall are already 2-0 up from the first leg of the Northern Final and host the Lilywhites next week before they entertain Gillingham in League 1 on Sunday 1 February.
Fellow Under-21s striker Jacob Blyth made his 22nd appearance for Burton Albion in their 1-1 League 2 draw with Portsmouth on Saturday.
The young frontman played 90 minutes for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s men as Darragh Lenihan rescued a late point for the Brewers.
Blyth has scored five times in a yellow jersey and remains a firm favourite at Burton, who currently sit second in the table, just one point off league-leaders Wycombe.
They next travel to York on Saturday 24 January, with Blyth hoping to continue his fine form for the Staffordshire-based outfit.
Development squad forward Tom Hopper, who joined Scunthorpe on a one-month loan deal earlier this month, made his second appearance for Mark Robins’ men on Saturday.
Scoring on his debut in the Iron’s 4-1 win over Cain’s Walsall last time out, Hopper played 90 minutes in the 2-0 loss to Bristol City on Saturday.
In unfortunate circumstances, both of Scunthorpe’s recognised goalkeepers broke their arm, meaning defender Andy Boyce had to replace shot-stopper Jamie Severn in the nets, who had already come on for injured ‘keeper Sam Slocombe.
A penalty from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and a late Luke Freeman strike sealed the triumph for the visitors, with Scunthorpe now sitting three points above the drop-zone with a tricky test against promotion-chasing MK Dons to come on Tuesday 27 January.
City winger Jack Barmby, who signed a one-month loan deal with Rotherham earlier this month, made his second appearance for the Millers on Saturday, playing 57 minutes for Steve Evans’ men.
Goals from Tommy Elphick and Callum Wilson meant Championship-topping Bournemouth recorded a 2-0 win against Barmby’s side.
The young attacker will hope to be involved in Rotherham’s league clash with Bolton on Tuesday 27 January.
Under-21s duo Adam Smith and Callum Elder, who signed one-month loan deals with Mansfield earlier this month, both played in the 3-2 League 2 loss to Exeter on Saturday.
Tom Nicholls put the visitors ahead before goals from Billy Kee and Vadaine Oliver meant the Stags took a 2-1 lead, but a Scot Bennett effort and a spot-kick from Alex Nicholls denied Mansfield.
Goalkeeper Smith and defender Elder could be involved in Saturday’s tough League 2 test against top-of-the-table Wycombe as Mansfield hope to move away from the drop-zone.
Meanwhile, winger Adam Dawson, who joined Bristol Rovers on a one-month loan deal last month, was an unused substitute in the goalless Vanarama Conference draw at Woking on Saturday.
Dawson will aim to be involved in the trip to Dartford on Saturday 31 January, with the hope that his side, who currently sit second in the league, can close the gap on leaders Barnet.
Midfielder Paul Gallagher scored his eighth goal of the 2014/15 season in Preston’s 2-2 League 1 draw with Leyton Orient on Friday.
Converting a penalty to put his side 2-1 up, Chris Dagnall’s late strike denied Simon Grayson’s outfit the win.
Currently fourth in the table, Preston host bottom club Yeovil on Tuesday 20 January before they entertain Sheffield United in the FA Cup Fourth Round at Deepdale on Saturday 24 January.
