Morgan: Solid Team Performance

Leicester City captain Wes Morgan believes the point gained in Saturday’s 0-0 Barclays Premier League draw with Sunderland was down to a solid team performance.

The Foxes registered their second clean sheet of the season against Gus Poyet’s men in a game where both sides had their chances to secure the win.
While Kasper Schmeichel denied Sunderland top-scorer Steven Fletcher at one end of the pitch, Costel Pantilimon was on hand for the Black Cats, twice halting midfielder Matty James.
Although City were unable to find the back of the net, the draw meant Nigel Pearson’s side put to an end a four-game losing streak – something which will certainly lift the players going into next weekend’s clash with Queens Park Rangers.
“It was a tough game,” said Morgan. “There was a lot riding on today before going into the game so we wanted to put in a good performance. We’re delighted to come away with a point, and a clean sheet is another positive as well, so I hope we can build on that.
“I think mostly during the season so far we’ve been okay – with the odd slip or lapse in concentration we’ve conceded a goal. Today was a solid team performance and a clean sheet is a big plus.”
And Morgan will take plenty of positives from preventing Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham from finding the back of the net, knowing that both strikers have impressed in England’s top flight throughout their careers.
He added: “It was a very tough battle. They’re well established Premier League players and they’ve been scoring in this league for years, so we definitely had our work cut out today. We battled back and we felt we competed so we’re delighted to keep them quiet.
“Our main job is to keep clean sheets and to give the team the chance to win the game. We’ve done that today. It’s a team effort – it’s not just down to the strikers to score goals – defenders and midfielders can all chip in. If we can get a goal and take the pressure off them I’m sure they will start scoring again.”
