Leicester joined the Rugby World Cup party on Sunday, as one of world sport’s premier competitions burst into life on Filbert Way.
After years of preparation and two weeks into the tournament, the city of Leicester finally made its bow in the competition, hosting the first of three pool matches at Leicester City Stadium – Argentina vs. Tonga.
Bringing together two nations from opposite sides of the world, along with rugby fans from Leicester and beyond, Sunday’s Pool C clash was a festival of colour and noise, played out in glorious Leicestershire sunshine, that underlined Leicester’s status as one of the UK’s leading sporting cities.

Fans packed into the home of Leicester City to watch a terrific showcase of international rugby, which eventually saw Argentina emerge triumphant by a margin of 45 points to 16.
Among those in attendance to support his fellow countrymen was Leicester City’s Argentine striker Leonardo Ulloa. Having been involved in the Foxes’ Premier League fixture at Norwich City on Saturday, Leo joined fellow Argentine Gonzalo Camacho from Leicester Tigers for the game, cheering on the Los Pumas in their quest to reach the quarter finals.

The pair were not the only members of the Argentine sporting family in attendance either, with footballing great Diego Maradona taking in the action from the Directors Box.
It was a memorable occasion for sporting fans in Leicester and merely the start of the venue’s involvement in the competition. Canada and Romania arrive for a Pool D encounter on Tuesday evening (4.45pm kick-off), before Argentina return for their Pool C meeting with Namibia next Sunday (12.00pm kick-off).

Limited tickets for both remaining matches at Leicester City Stadium are available at https://tickets.rugbyworldcup.com/.
