- Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers discusses Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha four years after the Club’s Chairman passed away- Khun Vichai lost his life in a tragic helicopter accident at King Power Stadium on 27 October, 2018- Rodgers says everyone at the Club is dedicated to Khun Vichai’s legacy
Thursday (27 October) marked four years since the Club’s former Chairman passed away – alongside staff members Kaveporn Punpare and Nusara Suknamai, and pilots Eric Swaffer and Izabela Lechowicz – in a tragic helicopter accident at King Power Stadium.
After King Power’s takeover of the Club back in 2010 – then a second-tier side – Khun Vichai’s leadership inspired a magnificent era of success at Leicester City as the Foxes lifted the Premier League title and competed in the UEFA Champions League for the first time.
Since tragically losing his life in 2018, under the guidance of Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha – Khun Vichai’s son – the Foxes have continued to build, winning a maiden FA Cup in 2021. Other landmarks, including a FA Community Shield win and reaching the semi-final of a European competition, have since followed as the Foxes continue to grow and develop.
Speaking on the anniversary of that terrible night four years ago, Rodgers addressed the media, outlining Khun Vichai’s legacy at the Club and its impact on Leicester City today.
“It's very important,” the Foxes manager said. “It’s always in balance. You think of the great person and the great work he’s done within the community… I think every player coming in is fully aware of his presence and what he was to the Club and what he still is.
“Then you also have the future, with Khun Top and his family, and the work they’re carrying on. Every player who comes in is aware, of course.
“We’ve had players who were here when the tragedy happened and that will always be with them, but it’s very much a part of the story here – a huge part of the story – but also the optimism of carrying on with a great legacy that he created himself here.
“You can look at our move as a team and as a club into our training facility here at Seagrave. We’ve had the FA Cup, the Community Shield, the [UEFA Europa Conference League] semi-final, the ongoing work with the local council in terms of progressing the stadium [expansion and site development]… this is a great testament to the legacy of Khun Vichai.
“Also, the great work of a lot of people at the Club – the board and Khun Top. As his son, he’s taken over that leadership. Everyone is very proud, very humbled and very privileged to carry on his legacy and I think the achievements the Club has made pay testament to that.”
Earlier on Thursday, a ceremony was staged at The Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Memorial Garden to remember all five of the people we lost. Rodgers joined senior LCFC staff, plus players past and present, at a dignified service on Filbert Way.
“[Chief Executive] Susan Whelan and the Club have done an incredible job at ensuring the memory is there,” Rodgers added. “We’ve built a beautiful garden here. Each year, when you go back, and each time you go back, it’s maturing and growing. It’s absolutely beautiful.
“This morning, there was a number of the senior staff, some of the former players, and some of the current staff and board that were there.
“It was a lovely ceremony, with the monks, and it pays tribute to a sad, sad time in the history of the Club, and for the family, but we always commemorate it and use it as a great motivation – everything he did – for everything we want to continue with.”
