- LCFC Women return to Barclays Women’s Super League action this Sunday- City travel to Select Car Leasing Stadium to face Reading- Manager Lydia Bedford gave a squad update ahead of the weekend- No new injury concerns as Demi Lambourne competes for goalkeeper's shirt
A crucial weekend in the WSL approaches for the Foxes as they travel to Select Car Leasing Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face a Reading side, also looking for their first league win of the season.
Following Friday training session, Bedford provided an update of her squad, having already played 90 minutes of football this week, losing to Liverpool in the Continental Tyres League Cup on Wednesday night. She opened with some good news for Leicester supporters by confirming that 'there are no new injuries in the squad' with only those with long-term injuries still excluded from the game.
A player that recently returned to action was goalkeeper Demi Lambourne, who got her first full appearance in midweek. Bedford spoke about how important it was to have the 'keeper back with the team. “It was brilliant, and a real boost for the team to have her back," Bedford said. "She had a really strong pre-season, and it was only 10 days before the start of the season that she picked up that injury, so I know that was a big blow for her at the time, and that kicks you when you’re down, but it’s great to see her back on the pitch.
"For me, I want competition in every position and there shouldn’t be anyone playing that walks into the meeting room on a Saturday morning knowing that they’re 100 per cent down to start.
“I think, from our perspective, we said to them at the start of pre-season that they were pushing each other and the space was open.
“Obviously that got dictated by the injury situation in the end, so now, Kirstie [Levell] is playing every game, and its Demi [Lambourne's] job to work hard every day of the week in training now she’s back on the pitch, to try and push for the spot." The Foxes manager went on to talk about the impact of the Liverpool reverse: “We knew, going into the game, that the priority was freshness for this weekend and we picked a formation that allowed us to give opportunities to players that needed minutes.
“We don’t really look at Wednesday night’s game with any form of concern. For us, the most important thing is we’ve been able to get out on the pitch with everyone fit and available for the weekend and as fresh as they possibly can be," she added.
“I think this week has been a big week for the Club. There’s been a lot of things going on, on and off the pitch, that has had an impact on the squad’s mentality going into the weekend. There’s a real buzz about the training session that we just finished.
“We ended the session with some finishing and you’ll be pleased to know the ball was firmly hitting the net on a number of occasions."
