Ahead of Leicester’s Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round clash with Brighton & Hove Albion on Filbert Way, Brendan Rodgers outlined the intentions to progress and reach a second successive quarter-final.
“We want to do well,” the manager said in his pre-match press conference. “We’re in a decent position in the domestic league, so we just have to attack every competition, do the best we can, and see where it takes us."
And Kelechi Iheanacho’s last-gasp injury time winner on a freezing cold night at King Power Stadium ensured it would be City’s name in the hat for the last eight, much to the Nigerian forward’s delight.
“I'm really happy,” the striker told LCFC TV. “Everyone is smiling. It's too cold so everyone wants to get home but I'm really happy to get the winner today in 90 minutes. It's one of those games, it's really freezing. So, when I scored, everybody in the stands, we're happy.”
A second successive victory followed three days later, this time in the Premier League, as the Foxes came from behind to stun champions Liverpool during a whirlwind seven-minute spell.
Goals from James Maddison, Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes – all from the 78th minute onwards – sealed a memorable 3-1 home win. Barnes hailed the turnaround from the Foxes in his post-match interview.
He commented: “We reacted really well and then it was a bit of a crazy 10 minutes where we got the goals. I think that's credit to us, we were clinical. As soon as we got our first goal, we had the belief to go and get the second and the third and kill the game off.
“We're obviously really pleased, but it's not a massive, massive shock to us. We know that we're more than capable of that with the quality that we've got in our squad.”
A fifth game unbeaten in all competitions and second consecutive Premier League victory arrived at Villa Park, as Leicester saw off Aston Villa 2-1 on 21 February. Maddison and Barnes were again on the scoresheet, with several aspects of the performance pleasing the manager.
“It was an excellent win for us,” Rodgers declared. “In the first half, in particular, our football was very, very good… our movement, the speed of the game, the pressing was really good.”
February ended with back-to-back defeats, including a UEFA Europa League exit, and so City were determined to recover from those setbacks in March.
Before travelling to face Burnley at Turf Moor, Luke Thomas commented: “Bouncing back from defeats has been a main part of the season and we’ve done that so well so far. Hopefully we can continue to do that on Wednesday by going out there and showing our quality again.”
It was one moment of quality from Iheanacho that rescued a point for the visitors as he smashed home an exquisite volley from international team-mate Wilfred Ndidi’s aerial pass. And after the game, Iheanacho spoke about the togetherness within the squad.
“It was a slow start from us, but after that goal, we got the momentum, got the rhythm, got them running and got the equaliser. We are together as a group and as a team.”
Another impressive run was just around the corner and again City had to come from behind in the next away trip, beating Brighton by a one-goal margin for the second time in as many months.
Iheanacho equalised once more and then Daniel Amartey’s late winner meant Rodgers’ side took home three points from AMEX Stadium. Timothy Castagne referenced the significance of the victory in his post-match chat with LCFC TV.
“It’s a very important win for us today,” Castagne said. “We didn’t start well, it was a very bad first half, but we showed character to come back and win this because it’s a very good side.”
Next up, Sheffield United visited King Power Stadium and the hosts produced one of the performances of the season to equal their biggest-ever home victory (5-0) in the Premier League.
Another three goals for the in-form Iheanacho sealed his first ever Leicester City hat-trick, while fellow goalscorer Ayoze Pérez spoke after his third goal of the season.
"It's a very good performance from all the team," Pérez said at full-time. "We knew the importance of this game. We knew we had to get a result, especially because we're at home and we could improve our home form a little bit. It's a great result and, obviously, also congratulations to Kelly (Kelechi Iheanacho) for the hat-trick!"
Leicester continued that momentum into the FA Cup Quarter-Final with Manchester United and booked a place in the last four with a 3-1 success on Filbert Way.
It was a fourth game unbeaten and a third successive win for the Foxes, but most importantly, it booked a first FA Cup Semi-Final appearance since 1982. Iheanacho netted another two, while Youri Tielemans’ strike also contributed to the victory.
Rodgers was delighted with his team’s all-round game: “We were playing against a top team who have got outstanding players and you only need to see Manchester United’s record to know how good they are, but I thought overall, we were excellent in the game.”
That man Iheanacho found the only goal in the semi-final against Southampton at Wembley, as Leicester played in front of a small number of fans. The Nigeria striker’s 10th goal in seven games sent City in their first FA Cup Final for 52 years.
“It’s really amazing, it’s a dream come true,” he told LCFC TV. “I didn’t know it’s going to come like this, but we are in the final now so we are really happy.”
His manager was similarly thrilled but also focused on the task in hand: “I’ve always tried to respect that we should always put out a team that could challenge to get to a final. We now arrive and we’re one game from creating history.”
Before the showpiece event took place, back-to-back home success were recorded over West Bromwich Albion (3-0) and Crystal Palace (2-1), with Rodgers pleased with the quality of goals scored by Vardy, Jonny Evans and Iheanacho against the Baggies.
“[It was a] really good win," he said. "The goals [were] excellent. Two really top-class goals and then Jonny [Evans], anticipating for his header, and that was nice."
Leicester also secured their first win at Old Trafford since 1998, beating Manchester United 2-1 with goals from two defenders in Thomas and Çağlar Söyüncü. Thomas, whose cracking strike was his first Premier League goal, spoke about the mood in the dressing room after that victory.
"We're all buzzing in there,” the goalscorer beamed. “Coming to Old Trafford, there's no better feeling to play here, but to come away with three points is even better - and to get my first goal! I'm over the moon.”
And so to Wembley for the FA Cup Final. Chelsea were the opponents, a team Rodgers described as “exceptional” and “outstanding” in his pre-match press conference. He was also predicting a tense contest played in front of a brilliant atmosphere with around 6,000 Foxes fans inside the stadium.
"It’s going to be a great occasion,” he said. "I’m sure it will be a tight game. We’ve been consistent, we’re playing really well over a period of time and this has been the next step for us."
Northern Ireland international Evans also spoke to the media ahead of the final: “It’s the one trophy everyone wants to have. It’s very historic and people, especially from my generation, they watched it all when we were younger.”
One moment of magic from Tielemans proved to be the difference, with the Belgian’s goal going down in Foxes folklore as the one that brought the FA Cup trophy home for the very first time in the Club’s history.
Coming off the bench to see out the game in the final minutes, Club captain Wes Morgan then lifted the trophy with Kasper Schmeichel and after the post-match celebrations on the Wembley pitch spoke to LCFC TV about the triumph.
“To see the game out and get our hands on the trophy, it’s an unbelievable feeling,” he said. “It’s right up there with winning the league. I just need to let it sink in!”
Meanwhile, another Premier League winner, Vardy, ranked it as one of his greatest achievements. City’s No.9 commented: “To do it on a night, I know it isn’t everyone, but 6,000 to 6,500 Leicester fans here with us, the noise they were making cheering us on, it just makes that feeling even more special.
“It’s massively up there. Winning anything, any trophy, you have to put it at the top. It’s not an easy thing to do, so I think it’s testament to the lads for the performance they put in.”
Although the final game of the league campaign ended in defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at King Power Stadium, confirming a fifth-place finish in the Premier League, there was much to celebrate as the players were able to parade the FA Cup trophy around the pitch, in front of the Blue Army for the first time all season.
There was also a fond farewell to two legends as Morgan and Christian Fuchs both departed the Club.
In his final interview before leaving, Fuchs spoke of his pride at wearing the Leicester City shirt: “I’m looking back without any regrets, looking back very proud, and I have a big smile on my face. It has definitely been the best six years of my career.”
Leaving the last word to Wes Morgan, he summed up his nine years as a Fox: "It’s a fantastic club, we’ve got great owners, we’ve got great management and we’ve got great players, so the future is very bright.
"To come to Leicester has been one of my best choices. I can always look back on the memories. We’ve had some great times together. The fans have always been good to me. I always played my heart out for them.”
