- Leicester City defeated Wolves 1-0 at King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon- Jamie Vardy's 41st-minute strike settled a tense encounter on the opening day of 2021/22- Former defender Gerry Taggart was impressed by the defending on display from the Foxes- He also isolates the impact winning early will have on City's confidence
Jamie Vardy's first-half strike - following excellent wing play from Ricardo Pereira - was the difference at King Power Stadium, although Bruno Lage's visitors tested the Foxes' resolve in the latter moments during a tense opening day encounter in the Premier League.
Speaking during LCFC Radio's post-match analysis, ex-Northern Ireland centre-back Taggart, a mainstay of Leicester sides over the turn of the millennium, was impressed by the determination on show.
"First of all, what an atmosphere to begin the season at King Power Stadium," he said on Matchday Live. "We were asked a question before the game: does it make a difference playing at home or away? Well, it definitely did today. The fans played their part. I thought Wolves, in the second half, were excellent.
"It was a combination of poor finishing, you have to say, and unbelievably brave defending from some of that Leicester City backline. It kept them in the game and it was an unbelievable finish from Jamie Vardy, set up by the magical work of Ricardo Pereira down that right-hand side.
"That was enough to see this game through, but you've got to say Wolves will come away from this game disappointed that they haven't got something out of it. At the end of the day, that's football. Leicester City ultimately deserved it because they needed to dig deep and they did do so to get over the line.
"You've got to give them the credit because if you don't finish your chances, you'll never win a game of football. Vardy's goal was vintage. I thought there were a few good performances today. There was some brave defending from the likes of Daniel Amartey and Çağlar Söyüncü.
"When it comes down to critical moments in a game, there were two players involved. It was a magical piece of skill from Ricardo Pereira down that right-hand side, but without Jamie Vardy in the middle, I don't think anyone else could put that ball into the back of the net. Nobody else does what he does."
Taggart also pointed to the confidence boost which comes with getting that first win on the board so soon in the 2021/22 campaign. He says City can now turn attentions to tackling West Ham United next Monday at London Stadium (8pm BST kick-off) in a positive frame of mind.
"It's vital," he added. "It gets you up and running and you're on the front foot. If you lose today's game, you're going back into the dressing room after giving everything. Both teams gave everything, but it's Leicester who've got that vital three points.
"Wolves will go into the dressing room and wondering why they've not got a point. Leicester don't have to worry about that. For them, it's onwards and upwards, it's on to the next game."
