- Spartak Moscow host Leicester City in the UEFA Europa League on Wednesday (3:30pm kick-off)- Sports.Ru journalist Dariya Konurbaeva has provided a preview on LCFC Radio's Matchday Live show- Konurbaeva also provided a context to Spartak's popularity in their home country- Fans can listen to over four hours of live coverage from Otkrytie Bank Arena on LCFC Radio
The Foxes headed to the Russian capital on Tuesday hoping to leapfrog Spartak into second place in Group C, but they will come up against a side who secured a hugely impressive victory over Napoli in Italy last time out on the European stage.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday's showdown at Otkrytie Bank Arena, Konurbaeva explained the significance of Spartak in their home country and outlined why the fixture could be considered a 'must win' clash for the 22-time Russian champions.
"You need to understand Spartak means for the entire Russia audience because it's the biggest club in the country," she said. "It's the most honoured club in Russia. In England you have different clubs and even tiny towns have their own clubs, but in Russia the majority of the population will support Spartak.
"They were so successful during the '80s and '90s. During the Soviet Union period, they were called the people's club. The level of pressure on Spartak is the biggest possible every year. Their fans want trophies, but they don't always get them. In the last couple of years, they've not been the most successful club.
"Every season, every time in Europe, the pressure is there. The game on Wednesday for Spartak is a must win game from their perspective. It's their own home game so they want to win it in front of the crowd, partly because they haven't been doing so great at the beginning of the season in Russia."
While the Foxes enjoyed a memorable 4-2 success over Manchester United on Saturday, there was also elation for Spartak, who recovered from a two-goal deficit to deny city rivals Dynamo Moscow all three points in the Russian Premier League.
Konurbaeva believes Rui Vitória's men can be difficult to predict – adding to the likelihood of another dramatic outing for the Gladiators.
"The biggest impact is going to be from the game last weekend because Leicester played that brilliant game against Manchester United," she continued. "That's going to be a big push for the team, as [Brendan] Rodgers mentioned during his press conference, but for Spartak also got an emotional push.
"They played Dynamo Moscow, which is a derby, and they were losing 2-0 by the 85th minute, but it ended up a 2-2 draw. It was a very emotional game and I think they're going to go into Wednesday with the same attitude. They've got the result against Dinamo and they want one on Wednesday as well.
"Spartak is a very emotional team. They have ups and downs and you can't really predict them. Honestly, anything could happen on Wednesday, in terms of Spartak. It's going to be a very interesting game to watch."
