- Tottenham Hotspur are the visitors to King Power Stadium on Saturday (3pm GMT kick-off)- Football.London correspondent Alasdair Gold assessed the Lilywhites’ campaign so far- Captain Hugo Lloris and Yves Bissouma are set to miss out this weekend through injury- Tune in to live and free coverage of the game on LCFC TV’s Matchday Live via LCFC.com
Fifth-place Spurs will enter Filbert Way this Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City fresh in their minds, and with the squad boosted by the recent arrivals of full-back Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon and winger Arnaut Danjuma from Villarreal.
Analysing their season to date, as well as expectations for the remainder of 2022/23, Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Gold believes Antonio Conte’s side now have the capabilities to cope with the losses of two key players ahead of the encounter with Leicester City.
“The transfer window closed with them having brought in a couple of decent players,” the reporter told LCFC TV’s Matchday Live show. “Especially getting Pedro Porro on the final day, who was their main target.
“Results hadn’t been great but then they picked up a great win against Manchester City which lifted everyone. That was a big performance that surprised a few people, though Man City have still not scored a single goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“Everyone was excited and positive, with a full squad and no injuries. But then days later we find out that captain Hugo Lloris is out for the next two months and Yves Bissouma has also got a fracture in his ankle, so he’s going to be out for a considerable amount of time.
“I’d say on the pitch there’s more confidence. Their biggest problem this season has just been getting a bit of stability. There’s such a big run of games to come.”
Since City were promoted back to the Premier League in 2014, no top-flight game has produced more goals than the 71 in this fixture over the last nine years. When Leicester claimed the title in 2015/16, it was Spurs who were their closest challengers for most of the campaign.
Last term, meanwhile, Spurs scored twice in stoppage to come from behind and win at King Power Stadium. It’s a game that always produces excitement and magical moments, as the journalist testified.
He explained: “These games are always terrific, there’s something about them. We’ve had some ridiculously high scoring ones; we normally get fantastic goals as well. You have to go back to the season that Tottenham and Leicester were trying to fight it out right at the top.
“Last season, from a Spurs perspective, was probably the most dramatic game. The late goals were crazy. I’m sure both sides don’t want that drama again, unless it results in a win for them. It could be a really good game of football. Spurs will come in confident.
“For Leicester, it feels like they are just starting to come back. Obviously having James Maddison return is big. They’ve got this new confidence, especially with the Villa result.”
One Spurs player with a Leicester connection is England captain Harry Kane, who enjoyed a short loan spell at King Power Stadium in 2013. Since forging an enviable record of scoring 20 times in 19 games against the Foxes for Spurs, the 29-year-old brought up a landmark 267th goal for the Lilywhites last weekend to lead Tottenham’s goalscoring list outright, ahead of Jimmy Greaves.
“He’s just a phenomenal player,” Gold admired. “A complete player. He’s one of those who maybe outside of Spurs and the clubs he has got a very good record against, like Leicester, the fans of other clubs won’t realise how good he is until he hangs up his boots.
“He started off in the early seasons with a one-season wonder tag, which obviously now looks ridiculous. He was a goalscorer, but now he’s a No.10 and No.9 all combined into one. He was able to influence the whole game (against Man City). He came deep, he was pulling the strings, playing passes, playing through balls.
“I think that’s what Kane has over a lot of the top strikers, especially in England. He’s just an all-round player. He’s going to be on an absolute high at the moment because he’s just become Spurs’ all-time record goalscorer. He’s now gunning for Wayne Rooney next in the Premier League goalscoring charts. Rooney’s on 208, Kane’s on 200.
“He’s got a long way to go to catch Alan Shearer still, but he’s in a good place right now. He’s happy, he’s confident and they were able to give him a rest in the FA Cup game, so he had almost two weeks off recently as well, which for him is a real rarity. He’s in a very good state of form coming into this game.”
