- LCFC Women beat Liverpool 2-1 on Wednesday evening- Leicester have three points in Group B of the Continental Tyres League Cup- Aimee Palmer and Hannah Cain scored the City goals at Pirelli Stadium- It’s not just about playing one way but about having solutions, said Willie Kirk
After back-to-back wins in the Barclays Women’s Super League, over Bristol City and Everton respectively, the Foxes turned their attention to the League Cup, where they faced an unbeaten Liverpool side going into Wednesday night.
Aimee Palmer opened the scoring at Pirelli Stadium and Hannah Cain clinched the winner after an equaliser from Natasha Flint just before the break. The Manager was delighted to see a response in the second half to take the win.
“I thought our first half performance was a bit nice,” Kirk admitted. “We lacked a ruthlessness in everything we did in terms of the chances we created, getting onto first and second balls and some of our defending.
“We brought that to the second half and were a bit more aggressive. The second goal was fantastic; we were close to scoring a goal like that against Everton on Sunday with four or five passes.
“The players are proving to themselves that it’s not a one off. The result is important, but we keep focusing on the performances and we’re telling the players if you worry about the performance then you’ll get the result.
“When we want to play, and we’re patient and have confidence, then we can create good play. The second goal exemplified that and I’m sure we’ll be watching that a few times.”
There were five changes to the side that beat the Toffees at King Power Stadium three days earlier, but that did not reduce the quality in the side, with players like Deanne Rose and Cain handed their first starts, and Palmer back in the XI after starting and scoring against her former club on the opening day.
While Kirk admitted it was always the plan to make changes at half-time and throughout the match, he was keen to commend his players, who can all add something different tol aid Leicester's cause over the course of the season.
He continued: “It was planned to make the changes we did, and the times we did. Josie [Green] had a little bit of cramp, so we wanted to keep her ticking over but not putting too much on it. Deanne [Rose] is having a very slow return to full match fitness and that was her first start, and she showed a lot of qualities.
“Sometimes Deanne’s ability to run at players and drive with the ball is what we’ll need to start games, and at other times, we’ll need someone like Lena [Petermann] who is probably more physical and can hold the ball up.
“The beauty of all our four wide players is that they can play through the middle. We’ve also got Remy [Siemsen] who is out injured so we’ve got lots of quality and that’s exciting. Ava [Baker], who will get game time soon for sure, also adds to that quality. It’s not just about playing one way but about having solutions.”
After a late resurgence to secure safety in the 2022/23 season, the Foxes have carried on where they left off, and remain the only side in the top two divisions with a 100 per cent record. Kirk is hoping to maintain that momentum when they take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village this weekend.
“We proved last year that if we tell the players it’s a must win game and put pressure on them, they respond,” the 45-year-old explained. “I do believe it’s a tough group and tonight was a must win, if we want to get out of it. You’ve got to win that first game to keep on it.
“We’ve got to go to Manchester United expecting a good performance. That is the expectation, and then obviously whatever the opposition brings will determine if it’s good enough to get points, but we’ll be going there with the aim of bringing points back to Leicester.”
