- LCFC Women beat Liverpool 1-0 in the Barclays Women’s Super League- Hannah Cain scored the only goal of the match at Prenton Park- The result was City’s second league clean sheet of the season- Plumptre confirms that ‘the team will fight until the end
On Sunday, the Foxes picked up a huge three points in their bid to preserve their WSL status as they closed the gap to Reading to a single point.
This was accomplished by beating newly promoted side Liverpool at the home of Tranmere Rovers, and Plumptre was delighted to get the positive result across the line.
“It was a bit of a gritty game, and quite hard for Leicester fans to watch,” the defender told LCFC TV. “But overall, we’re happy because I think the big thing today is that we fought the whole time.
“Even when you knew they were gaining momentum, I think we rode it out and we believed that we could keep a clean sheet.
“I was saying to everybody I feel like I've headed the ball more than kicked it today, and sometimes it's not going to look pretty, and obviously we have shown that we've played better football than today. But sometimes, if this is the game they want to play, then we must rise to it.”
It’s fair to say the Leicester backline was under siege during periods of the game, most notably when Reds’ defender Megan Campbell was launching throw-ins into the box like they were corners. However, the Nigerian centre-half was keen to state how well herself and her team dealt with the occasional bombardment.
“We didn't want to focus on that throw as something to be fearful of,” Plumptre explained. “But I would put it down to our staff, we prepared for that well, their set pieces, we know what they're a threat on, and considering how many we had to defend, I think we did well.”
The only goal of the game came from a well worked corner routine, which Hannah Cain was able to turn in, and City's No.22 was full of praise for the Welsh forward.
“Hannah's really struggled with her injury,” the centre-back stated. “But she showed a lot of resilience and really deserves the goal because she's been showing what she can do in training. I'm just glad it's come off today.
“What’s funny is that Hannah scored an even better goal in training from that set piece, so it was great that she could do it again.”
Closing the gap to those above would have many people wondering ‘what if?’ but the Leicester-born defender believes that the team are working hard to make their targets a reality.
She added: “We know how important these games are, but we've always said that when we're on our game, we can compete, and to be honest I think people wrote us off before Christmas.
“But we've come back and have this belief that we are not a team that people can take points off as easily now, so that's what we want because we're here to fight and we'll go right to the end.
“He [Willie Kirk] wants us to be more aggressive, even if it means that sometimes we could make a mistake. But the more that we do it, and the more that we believe and trust one another, the more we'll get used to it and things will come off for us.
“I know that makes it a little bit harder for other teams to figure out how to defend against us as well, so we'll keep that belief, and hopefully we'll keep the trust in one another.”
