Group members Graeme Smith, Rishi Madlani and Karen Laurie were invited to the Club’s training base in Seagrave to share their experiences and to detail some of the challenges LGBTQI+ supporters face in a football setting.
The discussion was also an opportunity for the players to learn more about the group and to understand the important role they have as allies to the LGBTQI+ community.
The event followed on from the Club launching Football v Homophobia’s Month of Action at King Power Stadium at the start of February, where more than 40 guests joined Foxes legend Matt Elliott to debate how clubs, fans, players and footballing authorities can do more to focus their efforts on LGBTQI+ inclusion.
Speaking at the event, Graeme said: “It was great to have the opportunity to meet the men’s first team squad and it was heartening to know that they took the chance to learn more about some of the issues the LGBTQI+ community face in sport, particularly football.
“They were really receptive to us and made us feel welcome and comfortable to share our own stories, which we all appreciated.
“We are proud of our work with Leicester City and trust that this is another step on the way to making King Power Stadium a safe and welcoming place for all.”
Leicester City’s Premier League fixture at home to Arsenal on Saturday 25 February will be dedicated to Football v Homophobia, with players to warm-up in t-shirts and branding visible throughout King Power Stadium.
The Club have worked with Foxes Pride for a number of years to tackle homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in football, while promoting the welfare of its LGBTQI+ fans to ensure King Power Stadium is a safe and welcoming environment for all.
Earlier this season, the group’s efforts were recognised by the Club as it nominated Foxes Pride to be its Premier League Community Captain, with Brendan Rodgers and Jonny Evans presenting members with their awards at a celebration event at LCFC Training Ground.
Following the discussion, City goalkeeper Danny Ward commented: “Football is a game for everyone, it’s as simple as that really. The sooner we get that message across, and the sooner people sort of buy into that, then a better place football will be.
“The game has made improvements in the past few years, but there’s still a long way to go to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable to be themselves.
“This is why meeting Foxes Pride was so beneficial to us because it’s good to hear different views on this subject, especially as when we’re playing, we don’t really hear the shouts and comments from the stands because we’re zoned into the game.
“Some of the things we heard from Foxes Pride and the challenges they’ve faced have got to be addressed, and we as a Football Club and as a group of players can certainly help with that.
“At the end of the day, we’re all human beings, so just because one person’s sexual orientation may be different to somebody else’s, it’s about being accepting and acknowledging football is a game for everyone, whether you’re a player, staff member, a fan in the stands or just a follower of a team, we want it to be as inclusive as it can.”
A year-round campaign, Football v Homophobia exists to challenge discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression at all levels in football.
The initiative campaigns and educates to make existing football structures safe, welcoming and inclusive to LGBTQI+ people, while improving the representation and visibility of the LGBTQI+ community throughout football and realising the potential of the game in society as a tool to create positive change.
