- LCFC Women fell to a 3-2 WSL reverse at Everton on Saturday evening- Sam Tierney scored the equaliser after the Toffees had gone ahead- Anna Anvegård’s brace won it for the hosts at Walton Hall Park- Tierney hopes to take the same fight into some difficult upcoming games
It was a contest that ebbed and flowed, particularly in the first half, with Jemma Purfield’s strike handing Leicester the advantage before Toni Duggan and Anna Anvegård edged the home side into the lead at Walton Hall Park.
The Swedish forward netted again shortly after the interval to snatch the three points after Tierney’s goal had restored parity on Merseyside. Speaking in her post-match interview, the 23-year-old felt frustrated to come away empty handed after battling in testing conditions across the 90 minutes.
“We’re very disappointed,” she told LCFC TV. “I think it was a game we knew we definitely could have got at least a point from. We felt that the way we played, we took the game to them and it’s one of those days where you really don’t have much to say other than the fact that we’re disappointed we didn’t get the points there.
“It’s really open here so you feel even a little bit of wind. You could see in the first half playing against the wind, it takes it out of your legs running against it. The balls that we were playing in the air were holding up.
“But, having said that, it’s the same for both sides and I think they struggled just as much with that. It’s just something we had to come to terms with. To be fair, we grew into it, and we didn’t use it as a factor, but again, it’s just disappointing.”
The conditions also played a part in the equaliser, with Purfield’s free-kick causing panic in the Everton backline, allowing Ashleigh Plumptre to rise up and knock the ball on for Tierney, who was equally brave to meet it with her head and turn home for her second league goal this term.
“I think the wind held the ball up,” she explained. “It made it a difficult decision for their goalkeeper and defenders. It got knocked back across to me in the middle of the net and then I just knew that anything I got on it in that area was hopefully going in.
“We used the wind but it’s stuff we’ve been working on, and it was good to get a goal, but the result isn't what we wanted. I think if you watched it back you could see that we took it to them, we pressed, we were in their faces.
“Even when we regained the ball, we created opportunities. Maybe a few half chances when we looked back at it. But we probably need to try and finish a few of them and be a bit more clinical and start to manage the game in that area when we’re chasing a result.”
The former Sheffield United defender has now made 17 consecutive starts in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, playing in the top-flight for the first time since her spell at Doncaster Rovers Belles.
Her versatility has led to a move into the middle of midfield for the majority of those matches, but Tierney revealed that she is just concentrating on giving her all wherever she is deployed on the pitch, a mentality that is shared throughout the squad.
“It’s something I’m enjoying,” the former England youth international enthused. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to do so, first and foremost. I’m learning each and every week and this is a league that is very challenging and from one week to the next, you don’t really know what’s going to happen.
“I’m taking each week as it comes and my focus is just that, if I’m on the pitch, I give everything I can for the team. The resilience, the work ethic, the desire. You could see we are working as a team. Especially Sophie Harris, we had to make a few changes last minute. She came in and I thought she had a fantastic game.
“That just shows the group that we have is willing to work for each other and go on that pitch and try and get whatever we can, and should we take that into the next few games. There’s no reason we can’t get something out of them.”
