- Leicester City won the FA Community Shield with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City on Saturday- Academy graduate Harvey Barnes was thrilled to play a part in the occasion after an injury- The Foxes start the 2021/22 Premier League season against Wolves on Saturday (3pm BST kick-off)- Barnes hopes City can use Saturday's success as a source of momentum in the new campaign
Kelechi Iheanacho's late penalty handed last season's Emirates FA Cup winners more silverware at Wembley on Saturday as the Club registered its second Community Shield triumph in a 1-0 victory over Premier League champions Manchester City. For Barnes, it was the latest step in his return from a knee injury, sustained in February, which saw him miss the final of the FA Cup and Leicester's Premier League run-in. However, the England international can't wait to get started for the Foxes against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. "We spoke before the game and said we wanted to start off as we mean to go on, so today was an important game for us, and it showed in the way we played," the 23-year-old told LCFC TV after playing 79 minutes of City's latest memorable trip to the national stadium. "I thought it was a good game. They had chances, we had chances, and then obviously, it was decided by a penalty, which Kel put away brilliantly, so we’re delighted. I suppose there’s no better way to come back and play your first competitive game.
"I’ve been building up in the friendlies, but it’s obviously been a long time since I’ve played a proper game. Of course, to be back in front of the fans, at Wembley, and to top it off with a win is great for me and I feel really good."
Barnes admits it's been tough not being able to contribute to his boyhood club over recent months, but he was able to savour the occasion on Saturday as the Foxes ended a 50-year wait to lift the Community Shield once again.
"It’s always difficult watching on," he explained. "I was obviously here at the FA Cup and was delighted for the Club and the boys, but it was frustrating not being able to get involved. I’ve been able to play today in a similar game. Obviously, it wasn’t a final, but it sort of was.
"There was silverware to be won, so it’s the same situation and it was great to be involved. With the FA Cup, we obviously had a number of fans in, but not the amount he had in today, so it was amazing to celebrate today with them. I think it does set us up.
"To get that first trophy out the way before the season starts is great. We’ve gradually built up through all the pre-season games. Each game’s been more of a challenge and I think everyone’s feeling really confident going into the first game of the season."
