- Steve Beaglehole was particularly impressed by his side's ambition at Everton- The Leicester City Development Squad defeated Everton 2-1 in the Premier League Cup- City are now top of Group F with seven points, holding a four-point lead- Beaglehole's men are unbeaten in 12 matches in all competitions this season
Fraser Hornby’s own goal was cancelled out by Toffees captain Morgan Feeney in the second half, but Josh Eppiah scored a wonderful half-volley to seal all three points. As a result, the Foxes have opened up a four-point cushion at the top of Group F in the Premier League Cup ahead of the Checkatrade Trophy visit to Scunthorpe United on Tuesday. “It was a tough game, which I knew it would be,” Beaglehole reflected with LCFC TV. “It wasn’t a pitch we could play good football on, but I thought we started the game really, really well.
“If we could have got a second goal earlier, it would have been an easier night. When you’re one goal up against Everton, with their habit of winning games, you always need another.
“It was scrappy at times. These players get used to playing on good surfaces. They play at Holmes Park, which is terrific, so maybe they needed to adjust to it tonight.
“We showed great character to not settle for a draw, we really went for it.”
Beaglehole highlighted the performances of defender Sam Hughes and match-winner Eppiah before referencing City’s 12-match unbeaten run when discussing their overall progress.
The Foxes are second in Premier League 2, into Round 2 of the Checkatrade Trophy and top of their group in the Premier League Cup by a margin of four points.
“I thought Sam and Josh were our two outstanding players,” Beaglehole added. “It’s an incredible run that we’ve had but we’re always looking for aspects where we can improve.
“We’ve played better than this before so to come here and not be at our best but get a great win like this shows how far we’ve come in the last six months.”
