- Development Squad manager Steve Beaglehole previews the clash against Scunthorpe United- Leicester City's youngsters will take on the Sky Bet League 1 outfit in the Checkatrade Trophy- Beaglehole's side go into the clash on an unbeaten run of 12 fixtures in all competitions - The Under-23s manager is confident that his players can impress once again in Scunthorpe
The Foxes will tackle the Iron in Round 2 of the Checkatrade Trophy at Glanford Park after finishing as runners-up in a group including Fleetwood Town, Carlisle United and Morecambe.
Beaglehole’s side are firing on all fronts, second in Premier League 2 and in strong positions in all cup competitions, but they fell at this stage in the Checkatrade Trophy last term.
“It will be as strong a test as Fleetwood, for sure,” said Beaglehole, referencing a 3-0 reverse for City in August. “Scunthorpe are really up there, playing well and scoring goals.
“I know the ground very well, it’s a tight pitch and there will be a decent crowd there. For me, the Checkatrade Trophy is the biggest test for our young players.”
Beaglehole expects the Sky Bet League 1 side to pose problems for his defence on Tuesday, but he has been given reason for optimism this season by a side unbeaten in 12 matches.
“You’re playing against men who are working together as a team and we’ve got to drop down to playing six players under the age of 21 so it is a test,” he added.
“It’s a big ask. If you look at the number of Under-21s sides who have already been knocked out of the competition, it’s an achievement to get where we are.
“If we can get another result and beat Scunthorpe, it will be a fantastic achievement.”
