Steve Beaglehole could not hide his frustration after the Leicester City Under-23s fell to a in the Premier League Cup on Monday night.
The Foxes, without several regulars for the clash in Crawley, were an attacking force throughout at the Checkatrade.com Stadium but lacked the cutting edge required to climb off the bottom of Group E with victory against the leaders.
Henrik Bjordal struck for the hosts in the 16th minute before James Tilley added a second five minutes from the end to curtail City’s hopes of reaching the next round and Beaglehole admitted at full-time that he was disappointed with his side's defensive display.
“It made it more difficult having the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday which takes priority,” he told LCFC TV. “That will be a great game for a lot of the players who have played regularly with us in the Under-23s.
“They’ve all be prominent players in this team. We had Dean Hammond, who has been doing some great work in and round the Club, mentoring the younger players in training.
“We knew we’d only get an hour or so from Dean and I thought he did well and gave us some composure in the middle. But we can’t keep a clean sheet, we’re still conceding goals, early goals.
“I was disappointed with that, the first real good cross they got in was a mistake from our defenders. It made it difficult for us. I thought the game could have gone either way at half-time.”
After Bjordal’s early opener, City got back in the contest but couldn’t find an equaliser to show for their efforts before Tilley made sure of the three points right at the end, much to Beaglehole’s frustration.
He added: “If we could have got the next goal, we felt we could have gone on and won it. We came out after the break quite attack-minded, playing four up front, and we had numerous opportunities to get a goal back.
“I’m disappointed with what happened in the final third because we had so much play but we didn’t really look like scoring.”
