The Foxes are preparing to meet the Citizens in the last eight of the 2020/21 competition, which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a year after the pair faced off at the same stage in 2019/20.
Ahead of the 7pm BST kick-off at Academy Stadium on Wednesday 29 September, here’s a reminder of how Leicester reached the quarter-finals...
Teams from the top two divisions of the women’s game enter at the fourth round stage and Leicester, then an FA Women’s Championship side, were handed a tricky looking draw against fellow second tier outfit, Liverpool.
The Foxes had home advantage, however, with the game being played at Farley Way Stadium in April, but no supporters were present, due to all fixtures continuing to be played behind closed doors.
The hosts had also got the better of their fourth round opponents twice in the league schedule, winning 2-1 in Quorn before triumphing by the same scoreline at Prenton Park in January 2021.
And by the time the Reds arrived in Leicester for the second time, LCFC Women had secured their promotion to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League for 2021/22.
The Foxes’ first game since clinching the title turned out to be a closely fought encounter. Hannah Cain scored the only goal when Natasha Flint’s pressure forced Liverpool ‘keeper Racheal Laws into an error, allowing former Everton forward Cain to pounce and side-foot the ball into the empty net, sealing a passage into the fifth round of the competition.
An even trickier test was around the corner as LCFC Women were pitted against top-flight opposition, Manchester United, who were fresh from a second consecutive fourth place finish in the WSL.
Leicester had been crowned Championship champions at King Power Stadium two weeks prior to travelling up to Leigh Sports Village for the final fixture of the season, but were clear underdogs for this cup fixture.
United grabbed the opener when Leah Galton drove forward and picked out future Leicester striker Jess Sigsworth, who did the rest, clinically finding the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Shannon O’Brien produced the equaliser shortly before half-time, taking control of the ball on the edge of the area and weaving her way into a shooting position before squeezing a shot into the bottom corner.
The Red Devils were back in front on the hour mark, though, as a cruel deflection sent Jane Ross’ left-footed strike beyond Kirstie Levell. But the visitors showed great character to come back once more.
Clever play from Cain allowed her to pounce on a short back-pass from United defender Maria Thorisdóttir - who didn’t get enough weight on the ball to reach Mary Earps - and poke the ball home.
Straight from kick-off, City scored a third to take the lead for the first time. Cain was involved again, this time turning provider with a first-time lofted pass into the path of Flint, who still had plenty to do when she received it.
The Salford-born attacker, who started her career at United, out-muscled defender Millie Turner, and after a neat piece of skill to move the ball onto her right, fired it into the far corner.
That goal secured another cup win for the Foxes and set up next week's trip to tackle another Manchester club in the quarter-final, hoping for a reversal of Man City’s 2-1 victory at Farley Way Stadium in September 2020.
