Claudio Ranieri made 10 changes to his starting XI for the clash, handing Yohan Benalouane and Bartosz Kapustka their first starts of the 2016/17 campaign – Ahmed Musa the only man to remain from .
The Foxes broke the deadlock just a minute into the second period through Andy King, who headed home for his second goal of the season to hand his side the lead on Filbert Way.
City’s advantage lasted just 15 minutes, though, as Abdoul Camara’s 25-yard free kick took a wicked deflection off the wall before beating the unfortunate Ron-Robert Zieler, who had earlier denied the forward from a similar position.
Finishing 1-1 after 90 minutes, Claudio Ranieri introduced Islam Slimani and Wilfred Ndidi for the extra-time period and it took only four minutes for the latter to make his mark.
The Nigeria international drove forward with the ball and unleashed a fearsome strike from range that hammered the inside of the post before flying past Derby stopper Jonathan Mitchell – his first for the Club.
The lively Demarai Gray, who caused havoc on the wing, then rounded off the scoring with a superb individual goal. The winger carried the ball past two men and converted into the top corner to put the tie beyond doubt.
Major moment
On the pitch for just four minutes, Wilfred Ndidi couldn’t have hoped for a better impact. Scorer of some fine long-range goals while at Genk, the central midfielder netted another superb strike from distance to help the Foxes regain their lead in extra-time, and that proved pivotal to their win.
Ever since his assured debut in the fourth round on Saturday 7 January, he has proved popular with Ranieri, missing only one of City’s seven fixtures since then – in late January.
Who impressed?
A bright spark throughout 120 minutes, Demarai Gray capped his excellent performance with a deserved goal. His willingness to attack the Derby defence paid dividends throughout, not least when he skipped past two markers before hitting the back of the net.
It’s worth noting his cross that helped create City’s first goal, too. The England Under-21s international’s delivery to the back post found Marc Albrighton, who headed back across goal for Andy King to nod into an open net.
Where do we stand?
We’re through to the fifth round, where we’ll in just 10 days’ time. We’ll be bidding to make it to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since the 2011/12 season.
Coming up…
The Foxes return to Premier League action on Sunday with a crunch clash with Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. A victory could see Claudio Ranieri’s men move as much as four points clear of the bottom three.
