Leicester City’s Development Squad travel to Dagenham on Thursday 9 February hoping to get their Premier League Cup campaign back on track against West Ham United (7pm kick-off).
Following the 1-0 defeat by Brighton and Hove Albion early last month, Steve Beaglehole’s side must overcome the holders if they are to get back to winning ways in a competition which has proved to be a tough test so far.
City go into the match on the back of a 2-0 setback against Southampton at Holmes Park in Premier League 2 but the 3-3 draw with Manchester City seven days earlier will give them confidence ahead of the trip.
Beaglehole had new loan signing Molla Wagué among his ranks against the Saints earlier this week but also has a host of Academy graduates in contention after the Under-18s' continued success in the FA Youth Cup.
West Ham are without a win in three matches following a 2-1 reverse against Blackburn Rovers last week which was preceded by a 0-0 stalemate with Aston Villa and a 3-0 defeat to Brighton in January.
Terry Westley’s men will look to the Premier League 2 success over Norwich City in January for a source of encouragement ahead of the visit of City, a side they have already defeated this season.
Like City, who loaned 19-year-old Harvey Barnes to MK Dons last month, the Hammers will be without one of the stars of their campaign so far with midfielder Marcus Browne joining Wigan Athletic until the end of the season.
Browne signed for West Ham at the age of eight and quickly became known as one of the brightest young prospects at the club but they will have to find a way beyond Leicester without his talents on Thursday night.
Talking to LCFC TV, assistant coach Ben Petty said: “It’ll be very tough. They’re a good footballing side who move the ball well. We found it tough against them in the home game earlier this season.
“They’ve got some really good footballers and a lot of attacking talent. So we’ll have to be on our game down there and defend well, in numbers.
“We’re always optimistic ahead of games with this bunch of players. They’ve given us everything over the last few weeks and at times it’s been frustrating.
“But they’ve stuck at it and we saw last week against Manchester City how good they are when everything clicks into place so we’re expecting a good game.”
West Ham Academy graduate Joe Powell told whufc.com this week: “Now I’ve got that opportunity with the U23s, and considering I think I did pretty well in the last game, I just want to kick on and stay in this squad until the end of the season.
“That’s the aim for me. It was definitely a different challenge playing in that role from what I’m used to but I enjoyed the challenge of playing there and I think I did well in the game.
“Obviously it was disappointing not to pair that with a good result, but hopefully we can perform better against Leicester. I’d like to be involved in some part of it and hopefully we can do as well as we did last season and get the win.”
City already know all about Domingos Quina after the Portuguese forward scored a brilliant goal against them last time around at Loughborough University back in October.
After Browne’s opener put the Hammers on the right track, Quina collected the ball just inside the City half and sent a chip over Daniel Iversen to wrap up the victory for his side.
The former Benfica schoolboy was crowned a UEFA European U17 champion last year and has provided a spark in Westley’s side this season with his unique blend of power and precision.
Born in the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau before moving to Portugal as a child, Quina has impressed many in his first year of a two-year scholarship at the London Stadium.
