Leicester face the Black Cats for their first game of 2023, in a cup fixture at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground. The fixture was originally due to take place in December but freezing conditions delayed the match.
Ahead of the clash, here is a look at both teams, with all the matchday information you'll need to stay updated...
The Foxes camp
Due to three fixtures being postponed before the Christmas break, Leicester haven't been in competitive action since the 8-0 loss to Chelsea at King Power Stadium back in early December. Keen to make amends after a prolonged period away from the action, the Foxes restart will happen on Wearside when they take on Sunderland in Group B.
City currently sit third in the standings, with three points from two games. Those points being claimed in a 3-0 outing in Lancashire, when Mackenzie Smith, Connie Scofield and Aileen Whelan all found the net against Blackburn Rovers. The talking points
Willie Kirk has been thankful for the recent break in fixtures, and in an interview with LCFC TV, was keen to commend his player's work ethic, and is looking forward to some second chances. "Yeah it almost feels like the start of the season again," the manager explained. "That's the feeling around the training ground. The players see it as a fresh start, which is refreshing, and I'm glad that's the approach they've chosen."
Meanwhile, defender CJ Bott told us how important it was for the players to take a break, have the chance to reset and come back with a positive attitude, as the Foxes look to start picking up results, starting Wednesday night. “We spoke the other day that no game should be wasted,” the full-back informed us. “We go into each match wanting to win. We’ll put our best foot forward against Sunderland; we’re keen to score goals and get the win."
The opposition
The Black Cats haven't been in action since 4 December, when they claimed a 5-0 win over Coventry United, who currently sit bottom of the Barclays Women's Championship. Emily Scarr scored four on the day and will be one to watch for Willie Kirk's team.
That impressive win comes as Sunderland's second of the season so far. They sit 11th place in the second tier, with seven points from 10 games.
The League Cup hasn't brought anymore luck. They are fourth in Group B, still looking for their first point of this season's competition, having lost to both Manchester City and Liverpool, but did win in the Vitality Women's FA Cup on Sunday, knocking out Blackburn Rovers.
Last time out
There's not been a recent competitive fixture between the two teams on record, so it will be a new challenge for Kirk's side as they will have to learn quickly how to combat against the North East club.
Looking back at the Foxes last two appearances in the cup, Leicester have recorded a win, and a loss, against Blackburn and Liverpool respectively. Missy Bo Kearns, Rhiannon Roberts, Rachel Furness and Katie Stengel scoring the goals against a young City side at Pirelli Stadium back in November. Ticket and coverage details
