- LCFC Women manager Jonathan Morgan was delighted with City's 2-0 win away to Durham Women- Defender Sam Tierney found the net twice at Maiden Castle Sports Park- The victory maintains the Foxes' position at the top of the FA Women's Championship standings- All focus has now turned to preparing for the encounter with Coventry United, Morgan adds
The Foxes came out on top in the battle between the two sides leading the way in the division, opening up a three-point gap at the top of the standings, with a game in hand on their nearest challengers. The way in which City went about their business, recovering from the early setback of losing midfielder Remi Allen to injury, pleased LCFC Women's manager. "It was massive, there's no two ways about it," Morgan admitted to LCFC TV after the full-time whistle. "It puts us three points ahead of them now with a game in hand. "I'm hoping we can take that form and that momentum into our remaining games of the season. We knew that it was going to be a tough game, we knew what Durham were going to bring, it was extremely physical, especially in the first half.
"Today was a very intense battle. Remi came off after 13 minutes but it didn't stop us, we still stuck to the game plan, we were phenomenal today and tactically we out-thought them, out-manoeuvred them and deserved the win."
Two goals from an unlikely source in defender Sam Tierney sealed the three points at Maiden Castle Sports Park, with Morgan crediting her ability at both ends of the pitch, also helping City to record a third consecutive clean sheet. He continued: "We feel that anybody can step up at any time with this team, someone always comes to the fore and today it was Sam. We've got big players for big games and that's what matters at this stage of the season.
"Sam's been solid all season and she's actually been getting closer and closer. I think it was only last week she thought she was going to get some striking practice in when I set up a drill but I kept her as a defender.
"Before the game, we actually spoke to her and said 'this is your game today' and had a joke about her getting her first goal of the season. After the second goal went in, I said: 'I didn't ask for two, I just needed the one!'
"I'm really pleased for her, two well-taken goals, clinical just like a striker and I'm just hoping that there's many more to come in that blue shirt for her."
Morgan also spoke about the mentality from the team to keep their heads and finish the game off in the second half after an evenly matched contest in the first 45 minutes. He added that all focus now shifts to preparing for the visit of Coventry United to Farley Way Stadium in two weeks' time, on Sunday 28 March (2pm GMT kick-off).
"At half-time, it was quite a calm team talk," Morgan revealed. "The girls were calm, we just said that they were coming out to stop us playing, so let's turn that around a bit and use that momentum against them - that's exactly what we did.
"To get the goal so early on, it actually buoyed us on and we came out the traps really fast. It was a great finish from Sam and thoroughly deserved to get it so early on.
"It sort of settled us a bit, forced them to make a couple of decisions to get on the front foot, which obviously helped us a bit, because the game started to get a bit stretched. We knew our fitness would come through in the end, which it did.
"We turn our attention to Coventry now. We have to match this against Coventry and then London City and just win our games. All we are going to be focused on is one game at a time, remain humble and keep our feet grounded."
