- Leicester City’s full 2021/22 Premier League fixture list was announced on Wednesday- Wolverhampton Wanderers will visit King Power Stadium on the opening day on 14 August- Foxes legend Matt Elliott speaks about his expectations for the opening matches of the campaign- Excitement is already building ahead of the new season getting underway, he adds
The Premier League fixtures, announced on Wednesday, signal the beginning of the build-up to the new top-flight campaign, which will be Leicester’s eighth consecutive season at this level. Wolverhampton Wanderers are scheduled to be the Foxes’ first opponents in 2021/22, just as they were on the opening day two seasons ago and Elliott says everyone will already be looking forward to that game on Saturday 14 August.
“It’s uncanny the way it’s worked out and to come up against the same opponent that many times in a short space of time is surreal,” Elliott commented on fixture release day.
“Both players and supporters alike anticipate and are excited by the opening fixture and just seeing the schedule in general. You look at the opening game, the next few subsequent games and then you look to Christmas, because it has an impact on your family situation over that period.
“After that, you look towards the end of the season and the run-in that your respective club has got. Leicester have had it tough over the last few seasons so although you don’t want to be presumptuous, it’s somewhat comforting that this time it looks more favourable than it was last campaign.
“There’s much cause for enthusiasm. At the end of the day, you’ve got to face every team so they will all come around at some stage, but there’s an opportunity to get off to a decent start and finish with a flourish.”
A man who spent several seasons playing in the Premier League for the Foxes during the 1990s, Elliott knows all about how a good start can set the team up for a strong campaign.
And he is confident that the opening six fixtures, which include trips to West Ham United and Norwich City, as well as meeting Brighton and Burnley, could make it an exciting start as City look to build on last season’s fifth-placed finish - the Club's joint-second best position in the Premier League era.
The 52-year-old continued: “It seems quite a long way off at the moment, but you’ve got to prepare a little bit for what’s to come and hopefully get a decent points tally on the board early on.
“There is an opportunity to do that in the early stages and that obviously breeds confidence throughout the season. The fixtures are relatively favourable, without being overconfident.
“It’s inevitable you’re going to have tough periods of course, but the start and the finish look okay, so you’re going to come through some runs of games against the top opposition in the league, but that’s just the nature of the competition.
“Leicester will look to get off to a good start, as will every other team. It’s easier said than done, trying to pick up where you left off, but obviously things tailed off towards the very end of the season, but let’s be confident that they can get off to a good start.
“They'll be refreshed and, with some players back from injury, hopefully it’s a fully-fit squad with some new additions. There’s lots to look forward to and they’ll be bouncing at the start of the season.”
Elliott also hopes that 2021/22 will provide an opportunity for the Blue Army to return to King Power Stadium on a more regular basis and roar the team on to important victories across the campaign.
The supporters’ presence, albeit in limited numbers, was a major boost for Leicester’s historic maiden Emirates FA Cup triumph at Wembley, he believes.
“The start of the season, hopefully the crowds are back, certainly to a decent capacity,” Leicester's 2000 League Cup hero added. “We’re yet to find out if it’s going to be full or not, but you would imagine it will be a decent atmosphere whatever.
“The start of a new campaign brings that anyway, but especially off the back of last season and everything that entailed.
“The frustration is not being able to see team regularly up close and personal. Just watching it via screens, while it’s sufficient considering the times we’ve been through, it’s nowhere near the same.
“The FA Cup glory and the European challenge that lies ahead, as well as the Premier League fixtures that are coming up, it’s going to be exciting times.”
