- LCFC Women welcome West Ham United to King Power Stadium on Sunday- The Barclays Women’s Super League fixture has a 3pm BST kick-off- City were beaten by league leaders Chelsea last time out- Find out how to follow the Foxes this weekend HERE After consecutive defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea, City return back to King Power Stadium for the last time this season to face off against West Ham this weekend. Should results go their way, Leicester could secure WSL status for another year on Sunday afternoon, and the Nigerian defender is looking forward to the challenge, as fate rests in the Foxes’ hands.
“We’ve got ourselves into a good position,” Plumptre told the media during Thursday’s press conference. “At Christmas, a lot of people counted us out, but we kept the trust to get the results we needed to put us in the position we’re in now. “It would be nice to know come the end of the week that we’re safe, but to be honest we’ve just been focusing on the West Ham game. We have an internal points target to reach and we want to get the points ourselves rather than hope that others don’t get them.
“A lot of it comes down to our mentality and good culture within the Club to achieve what we have since Willie [Kirk] has come in. We’ve all had a collective shift in how we believe we can play and as a result, we’re picking up valuable points.
“A lot of people underestimated us, and I understand it’s a result driven business and when we hit Christmas with zero points, we knew it would be tough. But we didn’t focus on other people or what they were saying, and it’s showed that it’s worked.”
Closing down a seven-point gap since the turn of the new year, Leicester have recorded four WSL wins since their victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in January. Not wanting to look at the results of other teams around them has kept the Foxes focused, the No.22 explained, and says that they have their own goals to reach.
She added: “We have belief in one another’s abilities, and Willie has told us we’re in this position for a reason. Fate is in our hands now, so we must capitalise on it.
“If we would’ve focused on what other people are doing, then we would probably be in a worse position. We’ve been off the bottom, then back on it again before playing another game so if we’re constantly being dragged into that emotional rollercoaster, then it could’ve taken its toll. But we’ve had our targets set out since Christmas, we know what they are, and we’ve stuck together to achieve them as a team.”
Each home league match for City this season has been played on Filbert Way, and the Leicester-born centre-half was keen to praise the efforts made by the fans, who have supported them during the highs and lows over the course of the season.
Now with just one home game left, Plumptre asked for the Blue Army to show the same incredible support they have all season, as she hopes to repay the favours made to her Club.
“We analyse every game, but some of our best performances have come at home to Reading and Liverpool so we’ve made King Power Stadium a bit of a fortress for us,” the defender continued. “We like playing there and we love having the home crowd cheering us on. “We think that our recent good performances have come from persistence and hard work. There hasn’t been any luck involved in us getting these points; it starts on what we do on the training pitch.
“I really care about this Club, the fans that come to the games, and the kids that wait outside for an hour afterwards to get their autographs. I grew up here, played in the Academy here so I feel like I have a responsibility to put in everything I can to keep us in this league.
“We’ve had a lot of pressure on us in games this season, and I think we have this belief now to know we can win these big games, so we don’t let us affect us on the pitch. If anything, I believe we’ve proved that we perform well under pressure.
“Whatever the result is between Reading and Tottenham, we want to win. We don’t want to get the bare minimum to survive, we want to perform well and win both games we have left. Ultimately, if we do our job, then everything else takes care of itself.”
