- LCFC Women face Manchester City at Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday 18 January (7pm GMT kick-off)- The Foxes have won two games in the Continental Tyres League Cup against Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland- City sit third in Group B with six points from three games- Manager Willie Kirk confirms he will put out a team capable of beating the Manchester side
The return to action saw City score eight goals, concede zero, and pick up two wins in two different competitions, in what was a very successful week for the Foxes.
After the win against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, Kirk is looking to continue this winning form as his side take on the Citizens in their final league cup group stage match. “It’s been like that since we got from Christmas,” Kirk claimed to LCFC TV. “But it’s nice to get a win and have something tangible. It makes it feel real, but whether that buzz is because of the win or the break, it’s positive to see.
“I’ve been strong on remaining humble, as we’ve not actually achieved anything yet. There’s still a lot to do, and the players understand that. It’s two important wins but it’s only two wins, and nothing has changed too much in the short-term.
“We’ve still got long long-term targets, and the buzz has increased, but it’s been there since we returned from the break.
Looking ahead, the former Everton head coach is pleased that Wednesday evening’s game will be worth something, as Leicester look to progress from Group B.
“I said to the players before Sunderland that I didn’t want dead rubber games at this Club,” Kirk explained. “So the victory against Sunderland means that the fate is in our hands.
“Any win against Manchester City puts us through to the quarter-finals, and that’s our aim, so we’ll put out a team to try and win the game.
“We’re still quite low on numbers until we get another couple through the door, but we’re still carrying a few injuries so we’re not in a situation to experiment with the squad too much.
“We’ll put out a team capable of winning the game, and I think we’ve proved in the last few games that the youngsters are capable of the challenge. So, if there are youngster playing, it’s because we think they are good enough.”
Within the eight goals, there were seven different goalscorers, and Kirk is proud that his team are showing the hunger to find the net, and hopes this will continue throughout the rest of the 2022/23 campaign.
“I think it’s important that we’re not just relying on one person to score the goals,” the manager continued. “They’ve been contributed from all over the place, and long may that continue.
“We’ve got a real hunger and desire to score. Sam Tierney showed that yesterday with her goal on Sunday, to get on the end of a loose ball and turn it into something. “We know that our forwards are always looking for opportunities but it’s nice to have the whole team looking to add goals.”
