**A captain’s goal against Peterborough…**
With the Foxes seeking inspiration and leadership at the start of the 2012/13, they got it from Wes Morgan. After joining in January 2012, Morgan was named captain going into the new campaign as they looked to start on a positive note against Peterborough United at King Power Stadium.
It was a frustrating first half for the Foxes though, who found Peterborough’s 4-6-0 formation tricky to break down, however in the second period, Morgan made a timely breakthrough with a powerful header from a Ben Marshall corner. Andy King then added a second to give City a 2-0 win on Morgan’s first league outing as Club captain.
**Players’ and Supporters’ Player of the Season…**
In his first full season as a Leicester City player, both supporters and players alike made their appreciation of the skipper known as Morgan scooped a brilliant double of awards for the 2012/13 campaign.
His consistency across 48 games beat off competition from Kasper Schmeichel and Michael Keane for the Supporters’ Player of the Year award while he also chalked up more votes than Schmeichel and Paul Konchesky to pick up the Players’ Player of the Year crown that term.
**Carrying young mascot Ellis Page out onto the pitch at Loftus Road…**
Wes showed the type of captain and man he was during one of Leicester City’s biggest games of the 2013/14 Championship season when he carried young mascot Ellis Page out onto the Loftus Road pitch.
Ellis, who suffers from a MECP2 Duplication Syndrome that leaves him unable to walk or talk, was given the VIP treatment by Wes and his Leicester City team-mates, showing that the skipper had the Club and it’s supporters at heart.
The nine-game winning streak in the Championship…
With the pressure growing in the race for Championship promotion, the skipper helped guide his team to an astonishing run of victories, starting with a 1-0 success away to title favourites Queens Park Rangers.
Under the leadership of Wes, the team went on to record nine straight league wins – a new Club record. Along the way they toppled QPR, Reading, Bolton, Millwall, Derby, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Birmingham and Bournemouth. Not bad.
Lifting the Championship trophy…
Having stormed to the Championship title in 2013/14 with a Club record 102 points, few can forget the incredible scenes on the final day of the season against Doncaster as Morgan held the famous trophy aloft.
Not only was it a just reward for a player who had led his team brilliantly on and off the field, but it also meant a first taste of top-flight football for a player who had worked his way up through the leagues after being released by Notts County at the age of 15.
**Being in the Football League Team of the Decade…**
Alongside Leicester City team-mate Kasper Schmeichel, Wes was given the honour of a place in the Football League Team of the Decade – recognition for his incredible consistency across almost 400 Football League appearances for Leicester City and Nottingham Forest.
Those performances had seen Morgan named in the Championship Team of the Season on three occasions. An outstanding achievement from an outstanding player.
Playing top-flight football for the first time at the age of 30…
Many Leicester City players made their Premier League debuts against Everton on the opening day of the 2014/15 campaign, but it was certainly a special moment for Wes, who had waited so long to test himself at the top level.
Indeed he did a fine job of keeping Romelu Lukaku at bay on his first Premier League outing, helping Leicester City pick up a valuable point against some experienced opponents.
When Wes went 36 games without picking up a booking…
After picking up a yellow card in a 2-2 draw away at Everton on Wednesday 4 October, 2015, Wes went an incredible 36 games and almost a calendar year before picking up another – at Manchester City on 6 February, 2016.
It was a remarkable run, and one even more astonishing given that the Foxes were rooted to the bottom of the table after the Everton game, and flying high at the summit after the 3-1 win at the Etihad Stadium nearly a year later.
Scoring the winner against Southampton…
The footballing world was watching and waiting for Leicester City to stutter in their quest to secure the Premier League title. Tottenham had drawn 1-1 with Liverpool the previous day while the Foxes faced a tricky test against Southampton to move seven points clear.
But could they cope with the pressure? Absolutely. It was a tight game, but ultimately it was a timely first goal of the season from the skipper that proved to be the difference and marked City’s fourth straight 1-0 win. It put them seven points clear with just six games to play and was undoubtedly a key moment in the season.
**Being in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season…**
Having stared relegation in the face just a season earlier, it’s astonishing to think that Leicester City could have four players in the PFA Premier League team of the season just 12 months later. Among them, Wes Morgan.
The skipper’s rock solid displays and inspirational leadership were rightly recognised as he stood alongside the league’s elite to take his place in the best XI of the campaign.
The goal against Man Utd that ultimately won the league…
More often than not, when it matters, the skipper comes up trumps. So when the Foxes went 1-0 down against Manchester United in a game where a win would have won the league title, up popped the captain with a brilliant headed goal to equalise.
While that didn’t win the match, he played a key role in securing the 1-1 draw and his goal eventually proved to be the one that won Leicester City the Premier League title.
**The speech to the squad and scholars the morning after…**
As the world watched in wonder in the wake Leicester City’s title victory, the squad assembled at the training ground the morning after, still trying to get their heads around the magnitude of the achievement.
The staff, players and scholars all gathered in the gym that morning where it was left to the skipper to deliver the most inspiring of addresses about an achievement that could barely be put into words.
Lifting the Premier League trophy…
The image of an emotional Wes lifting the Premier League trophy at King Power Stadium in May marks what is without question the greatest single moment in Leicester City’s 132-year history.
Morgan was both instrumental and magnificent as the Foxes stormed to the league title by an incredible 10 points and in lifting the trophy, he gave Leicester City supporters a memory they never thought they’d have.
Playing every minute of a Premier League-winning season…
For an outfield player to feature in every minute of a league season is some accomplishment, but to do it in a campaign that ends with a title victory is another thing altogether.
In fact, it’s only been done three times, by Gary Pallister, John Terry and Wes Morgan. Wes’ feat is made all that more impressive when his summer exploits for Jamaica are taken into account. The skipper featured in the Copa America for his country and well as helping them reach the Gold Cup Final, meaning he barely had a moment’s rest before the new season got underway.
Those open top bus tours in Leicester and Thailand…
While there have been many unforgettable moments on the pitch, the image of Wes lifting the Premier League trophy on those amazing bus tours in Leicester and Thailand are not soon to be forgotten.
The turnout from supporters was phenomenal. Almost 250,000 turned out in Leicester while millions lined the streets of Bangkok to welcome the skipper and his team-mates. These are moments that every Leicester City supporter will treasure, and moments that are in no small way thanks to the captain.
