LCFC Women tackle Manchester City, who finished third in the Barclays Women’s Super League last season, this Sunday, with both teams desperate to get up and running by earning their first points on the board. Building up to what is another challenging WSL fixture, the defender assessed what has been a difficult start to the campaign, losing the opening three fixtures, including a last-gasp defeat at Everton last time out. “If you look at the results, it’s disappointing,” the Scotland international told the media on Friday. “But I think the good thing is that we have actually put in good performances, it’s now just turning those into getting points and wins. Everton is a prime example, we conceded very late on.
“We’re doing a lot of things right on the pitch but obviously there’s also areas that we need to improve and it’s being honest and aware about what we’re not doing well and make sure we put the work in on the training pitch to close the gap and eliminate the phases when we’ve not been good enough yet.
“Every setback gives you the opportunity to come back stronger. You can say that with injuries, but also with losses.”
The Citizens have also struggled at the beginning of 2022/23, losing to both Aston Villa and Chelsea ahead of welcoming the Foxes to Academy Stadium (2pm kick-off). Howard believes it is important to arrive with the right mindset, in order to come away with a positive result.
The centre-back explained: “There’s no pressure on us, no one is expecting to win, but we go to get points - that’s been the clear message. We always respect our opposition, but I think we go there with confidence and pride.
“You often say the game is won or lost before you even step on the pitch, because it’s all about mindset. They are a class team and they have been for many years. We’re fully aware of that. But I do think if there’s a time to beat Man City, it’s right now.”
The 29-year-old made her 50th Leicester City appearance earlier this month, bringing up the half-century milestone in a morale-boosting 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup.
Like many members of the squad, she has since been away on international duty with Scotland, returning to training on Friday to prepare and fully focus on the trip to Manchester.
“It’s the first day that we’ve all been back in,” the former Reading defender added.” There’s no time to waste. We’ve been back out on the training pitch preparing for Manchester City and we had to get straight to the point and get going right away.”
