- Demi Lambourne has extended her stay with LCFC Women- The goalkeeper is now contracted at the Club until 2024- Lambourne won Players’ Player of the Season in 2021/22- She expressed her delight at continuing her Foxes journey
Currently the longest-serving player within the squad, having joined in 2018 and going on to make 57 appearances in all competitions to date – more than anyone else at the Club - the ex-Reading youngster has now further extended her stay with the Foxes.
The shot-stopper, 26, revealed it is a dream come true to be working in this environment at Belvoir Drive every day and that influenced her decision to remain as a Leicester player until at least 2024. Previously at Oxford United, her rise has coincided with the Club’s own development. Present throughout as Leicester transitioned from a newly promoted Championship side into a full-time professional outfit rising up to the pinnacle of the women’s game in the Barclays Women’s Super League, Lambourne has seen it all.
“I’m really proud, really grateful and really thankful to the Club for giving me another year or two here, Lambourne expressed to LCFC TV. “The Club has given me a lot, obviously my first professional contract and my first start in the WSL, so I just want to repay them for that really. “The facilities that we have here, the coaching staff that we’ve got, and the girls that we’ve got here, it’s a no-brainer for me. Driving through the gates and seeing the pitches, it’s phenomenal really and all the gym facilities that we can use 24/7, it’s just fantastic. I don’t think there’s anywhere better than here.
“It’s not a job, it’s a dream. To come here every day and play on these pitches is brilliant. I’ve worked since I was a kid to be where I’m at now and it's almost like the dream has become a reality now. I don’t want to take my foot off the pedal, I just want to keep working and improving.”
Now a senior player within the dressing room, her role has naturally expanded to provide advice to members of a young group, if required. That came into focus during a testing maiden campaign in the top flight.
The 2021/22 season saw Leicester retain their WSL status, while Lambourne herself, who stepped up to play 20 times between the sticks, was rewarded with the Players’ Player of the Season Award.
While a vindication of her work and a boost to enter pre-season with added motivation, she was keen to point out that it is a team game, with everyone within the group playing their part.
“I was tremendously proud,” City’s No.1 admitted. “I appreciate it so much, obviously it’s great that the girls voted for me. I’m grateful. I was very shocked, lost for words. It just took me by surprise.
“I’d like to think I am quite approachable for all the girls to come and speak to me. Everyone needs someone to turn to. It’s a tough environment, a tough world in football and to have those players there to support you through it is really important.
“The jump was tough, and it was always going to be tough. I believe that we can push into mid-table I’d like to think and, in the future, even higher than that. We’re looking to improve. We got the job done, we stayed up, but now it’s improving on where we were last year.
“I think it’s just hard work and determination. I like to get my head down and again get as many starts in the WSL as possible and as many clean sheets as I can also.”
