- LCFC Women lost 2-1 to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon- Melissa Lawley and Marie Höbinger scored the decisive goals at Prenton Park- Missy Goodwin scored her second goal in the Barclays Women’s Super League- Foxes Manager Willie Kirk provided his post-match assessment of proceedings
After a positive start to the season, which saw City go four games unbeaten, Leicester have endured back-to-back defeats either side of the international break; first against Manchester City before a narrow defeat to the Reds at the weekend. An 85th minute goal from Marie Höbinger ensured victory for the hosts at Prenton Park and following the game Kirk shared his thoughts on the defeat, admitting that Matt Beard's side looked the stronger of the two sides. “I thought the best team won,” the Manager stated. “I thought we never hit the performance that we wanted to and sometimes that happens. Liverpool played well and deserved the three points.
“I actually thought when we equalised we would go on to win the game because I felt they could’ve been two or three goals up by that point so the fact they weren’t when we equalised, I thought we might have changed the momentum, flow, and mindset of the game.
“But they responded well and we’re disappointed to concede the two goals and I can’t have any real complaints about the game. The first half was similar to the Continental Tyres League Cup fixture earlier this season, but with Liverpool having the better of the ball. “Our performance was nice, and there were good points to it, but also sloppy bits to it and we never found a proper rhythm. We probably weren’t flexible enough in terms of our shape at times, and while the second half was a better performance, it was that half that lost us the game.”
Leicester went into the game having won their last three games against the Reds, most recently earlier this term when the two sides met at Pirelli Stadium in the group stages of the League Cup. The Foxes came out on top 2-1 in that encounter.
But the former Everton manager explained Liverpool’s impressive approach to this game, although was keen to commend a spectacular strike from Missy Goodwin to give the travelling side hope of points. He added: “Our disappointment probably shows you the journey we’ve been on. I was speaking to Kirbs (Steve Kirby) going into injury-time about how we were praising Liverpool, and I think that shows our expectations of ourselves.
“We’ve been playing such a style that teams find it hard to get to grips with, but Liverpool did get a grip on it, so as much as we could’ve been better, they did play very well.
“It was a fantastic goal from Missy [Goodwin]. We spoke briefly about switching her to the other side, and now I’m pleased I didn’t. It was a fantastic finish, and I think she could have got a little bit more joy against their defender today but she’s coming on every week, and she’s an exciting talent.”
Attention now turns to Arsenal, who have ten points from the first five WSL games, as they arrive to King Power Stadium for a 6:45pm GMT kick-off on Sunday evening, and Kirk believes it is the perfect fixture to have following defeat on the road. “It’s good to have back-to-back games at King Power Stadium now in front of our fans,” the 45-year-old continued. “Arsenal is probably the best game we could want now, because we can’t hide and feel sorry for ourselves.
“The focus we remain on us, and how we can implement our style of football, and be organised and aggressive out of possession, so we’ll take the game to Arsenal and see what we can get from it.”
