- LCFC Women were beaten 5-2 by Chelsea in the Barclays Women’s Super League- Jutta Rantala and Sam Tierney scored first-half goals at Kingsmeadow- Lauren James scored twice as Sam Kerr also found the net in London- The Foxes have eight points from eight games in the WSL
Leicester returned to Barclays Women’s Super League action at the weekend after a penalty shootout victory over Manchester City in the Continental Tyres League Cup, when they took on Chelsea.
After being 2-0 down in four minutes, City battled back to 3-2 at half-time, and despite a 5-2 defeat on Sunday afternoon, the Manager believes there are positives to take from the capital.
“I’m quite proud of the performance, which isn’t always the first thing that springs to mind when you lose 5-2, and the first five minutes we had,” Kirk explained. “But I’m proud we didn’t collapse, and we found a way to get back into the game.
“We showed resilience, we showed maturity to reset and find a way back into it. We scored two goals in the first half to put us in a good position at half-time, and we made positive substitutions to be more attack-minded.
“It obviously wasn’t to be, but we learned a lot about ourselves, and we’ll work hard to cut out individual errors that led to their goals.”
City will be kicking themselves after a number of Chelsea goals came from errors at the back, which the hosts capitalised on, and the former Everton manager explained how this is something they’d like to work on.
But now, heading into an international break, he labels the period a good time to reset ahead of a crucial ending to the calendar year, where he aims for maximum points.
“We’re still not happy with a lot of aspects of our performance,” Kirk continued. “We’re greedy, and impatient, and we want progress to be quicker. We want to push along the line even further in terms of where we want to be but losing to the champions isn’t going to make or break your season.
“The three games before Christmas are huge for us, and we’ll be looking to win all three of them, which will be a tall order because every game is tough, but we want to maximum our points in the WSL.
“By the end of the Manchester United game in the League Cup, we want to know we have a good chance to qualify, because we’re in a good position to get through the group stages.
“We’ll use the international break to reset. It’s always good to have them join up for their national teams and allow us to have a bit of a reset, and we’ll approach the next three games with the same aggression that we have all season.”
