Leicester have seen two games postponed in the last week due to the freezing weather conditions currently being experienced around the country, but they have one last chance to feature in 2022 as they welcome Manchester City to Pirelli Stadium on Saturday afternoon for their penultimate Group B match of the competition. Prior to the weekend clash, take a detailed look at both sides, as well as all the current match information you'll need...
The Foxes camp
Following a postponement on Wednesday evening in Wearside, where their cup fixture against Sunderland couldn't be played due to a frozen pitch, the Foxes' Barclays Women's Super League clash with Liverpool on Sunday would meet the same fate. This means that Leicester haven't been in action since their defeat by Chelsea at King Power Stadium on 3 December, and a League Cup match against Man City would prove to be their last outing in the calendar year. The Leicestershire side were last in action at Pirelli Stadium when they were on the reverse of a 4-0 scoreline at the hands of Liverpool in their most recent cup match, back in October. However, they would travel to Burton with Abbie McManus, Erin Simon and Shannon O'Brien all freshly available, while Ashleigh Plumptre and Josie Green remain sidelined until the New Year. Talking points
Before the weekend match-up, manager Willie Kirk spoke to LCFC.com about his thoughts on facing the Citizens: "Manchester City are one of the easiest teams in the league to analyse, but one of the most difficult to play against. "They're all quality players that they brought in during the summer, and you can now see the performances which were probably expected. Everyone knows exactly what they're trying to do, but stopping them, like we'll try to on Saturday, is much more difficult."
Midfielder Connie Scofield also offered her comments prior to the game: "Obviously it's been really cold, but we've had some good training sessions in preparation for the City game. "We've been pushing ourselves and each other in training, and we're ready to go on Saturday."
The opposition
Manchester City are unbeaten in their last 10 appearances - a run which started with a 4-0 win over the Foxes back in October. In fact, the Manchester club have not seen defeat since Sunday 25 September, when they lost 2-0 to current champions Chelsea. City sit fourth in the Barclays Women's Super League with 19 points, accumulated from six wins and a single draw, in their opening nine matches. The Citizens also home the league's top scorer, in the form of Jamaican striker Khadija Shaw, who has eight goals this season.
Man City have a rich history, with three FA Cup trophies, and a single WSL title, which came in 2016. All achieved with an impressive squad, which is currently filled with numerous internationals and Lionesses, such as Steph Houghton, Alex Greenwood and Chloe Kelly.
Saturday's visitors will arrive to Pirelli Stadium in good spirits, and as Group B leaders, with three wins from three. Leicester will have to be at the top of their game if they were to take points off this City side, but should they do so, a win in their final group stage match against Sunderland will give them the opportunity of qualifying for the knock-out stages.
In the dugout
Former Manchester City forward Gareth Taylor resides in the dugout for the weekend's away team, taking control from Nick Cushing in May 2020. He made over 650 appearances for the Citizens and his home nation of Wales.
His success was fairly imminent and it started in November 2020 when his guided his side to FA Cup glory, with a 3-1 extra-time win over Everton at Wembley Stadium.
After that, he would pick up his second trophy in two seasons, when he led City to their fourth league cup triumph with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the final at Plough Lane, having come from behind.
Last time out
The two sides met earlier this year at Academy Stadium in the WSL. Leicester were defeated on the day 4-0 as Shaw netted a brace, while Lauren Hemp and Yui Hasegawa added the other two.
Man City were also victorious in their three meetings with the Foxes during the 2021/22 season, which included a 5-0 outing at Sutton Park in last campaign's cup competition.
