- LCFC Women were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham Hotspur Women at King Power Stadium on Sunday- The Foxes are yet to secure their maiden points in the Barclays FA Women's Super League- There were encouraging signs in the performance against Spurs, says goalkeeper Kirstie Levell- WSL champions Chelsea are next up for City at Kingsmeadow on Sunday (12:30pm kick-off)
The Foxes are still waiting for their first points in the Barclays FA Women's Super League but, especially in the second half, they created a string of opportunities against a Spurs side who hold a 100 per cent record in the top tier of English women's football. Levell herself was called upon to make several impressive stops on Filbert Way, but she has no concerns that City's attacking players will start firing as they look to climb the WSL standings. "Of course, we’re really disappointed," she told LCFC TV. "We had a lot of opportunities. I know I had to make some good saves to try and keep us in the game, but that’s part of my job. Obviously, the strikers are disappointed because it's their job to score, but we’ve just got to stick together as a team. "It’s early days, it’s a long season, and we’ll keep our heads. We’ll keep positive and create a good team spirit and that we can build from this."
Leicester were much improved after the interval and were unfortunate not to draw level with Jemma Purfield's crosses in particular causing problems for Spurs. Hard work is key for City, says Levell, who believes the Foxes are not too far away from being able to put a run of form together. "Our main aim was to stay in the game, and try to get an early goal," Levell added, on the second half. "At 1-1, I think it would have been a different game. We had opportunities. I know they had a lot of opportunities, but it’s about sticking together on and off the pitch now and looking to build momentum.
"We are putting the graft in, we just need to get that early goal and, once we’ve kick-started our season properly, I think it’ll just come. It’ll flow naturally then, so it’s just all about getting that first point on the board. That’s our main focus and just continuing to progress from where we are.
"This is a learning curve for us."
The challenges keep coming for City after a week which has included clashes with West Ham United, Manchester City (in the Vitality Women's FA Cup) and Spurs, with a trip to Kingsmeadow to tackle reigning champions Chelsea next Sunday (12:30pm kick-off). "We take positives from any type of game, but it’s a hard week," Levell explained. "We’ve had three games and three very tough oppositions as well. We’ve got Chelsea coming up, so there’s no easy way forward now, but once that game’s done with, we’ll regroup.
"We’ve then got three weeks off with no game and we’ll look to try and fix what we can. We are all positive in training and I think we’ve created a really good team environment, so we’re just pushing on. Going forward, hopefully we can get the wins."
