A frustrating start to the new season continued last weekend when AFC Bournemouth came from behind to win 2-1 at Vitality Stadium. It was hoped that a 4-0 success over Nottingham Forest could inspire a run of positive form but, with two consecutive home games coming up, that remains a possibility.
The first of those King Power Stadium outings sees Crystal Palace visit the East Midlands for the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday. Rodgers took time out on Thursday to address the media ahead of that encounter with Patrick Vieira's Eagles – and here's what he had to say...
Seeking a 90-minute performance
Rodgers says he is aware of the discussions which are occurring in the media concerning City's form this season. However, the Northern Irishman insists he retains a determination and a clear vision for restoring the Foxes back into the higher regions of the Premier League table.
"For me myself, there’s no change," he said inside the King Power Centre at LCFC Training Ground. "If anything it gives me a greater motivation. This is a great coaching challenge, where the team is at and where I’m at with the team. It’s not where we want to be, of course.
"We’re disappointed with the result last week. As has been the case in many of the games, getting through to that 60 minutes, we’ve been very good in the games and in front. But then it’s just the details – concentration and those basics of the game – and that’s denied us getting the points.
"That was the same last week. Naturally after the game, from being in a really good position, to lose the game was bitterly disappointing. As a leader and a manager, I give myself 24 hours and then I have to move on and get the team ready. Over the course of the week, the players’ spirit has been really good. My dedication is to them, to help them through this phase that we’re in, and we’re in good spirits and ready to go again at the weekend."
Replicating the positives from Leicester's 4-0 win over Forest will be essential if they are to quickly repair their form, Rodgers says.
"I think the noise and the pressure and everything else is from the outside," he added. "From the inside and in my day-to-day, you understand it’s there. When you’re bottom of the league and you’re giving up some of the results we’ve had, then of course, it comes onto you.
"I respect that, but in terms of my work and my focus and my level of concentration, it’s still pretty much the same.
"My job is to try and look to get the team out of this situation that we’re in. It was a great performance and result, over the course of the 90 minutes, against Nottingham Forest and we didn’t back that up.
"Now we’ve got two home games, starting with the next one against Palace, to look to get three points again. My focus is really on our performance, which will allow us to get a result."
Focus on Palace
It's been difficult to judge Crystal Palace in 2022/23 so far, with their fixture schedule throwing up a tough start to the new campaign. They have emerged through that run in a decent position, looking upwards in the table – a situation helped by last weekend's 2-1 win over Leeds United.
"It’s a good game," Rodgers said. "They shifted their football idea last season when Patrick came in. They’ve got some very talented players, an athletic team. I watched their recent game against Leeds where Leeds started very, very well, but they came back into the game and ended up coming through that.
"They will pose another test for us, similar to what we’ve had before, so we’ve got to be at a good level. They try to build the game from the goalkeeper, they’ve got two centre-halves who are comfortable on the ball, they can play. Young [Eberechi] Eze, he’s a fantastic player.
"You can see him developing and growing at this level with his quality and how he carries the ball up the field. He obviously got his goal, the winner, last week as well. Odsonne [Édouard], I know very well. He’s a very clever footballer who’s a natural goalscorer and finisher.
"The two boys down the sides (Wilfried Zaha and Michael Olise) as well are a threat. It’s a good team that aren’t too far ahead of us and that’s the league this season. From where we are up to the middle of the table, it’s all pretty close, but you’ve got to get that sequence of results that can take you away from where we are. I anticipate a tight game and tough game."
