Leicester City
- Leicester City Under-19s have finished third in Group A on the opening day of the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup in Germany
- The young Foxes have thus far won one and lost three of their opening matches in Stuttgart, defeating Rosenborg Trondneim
- City fell to a dramatic 4-3 defeat to holders Rapid Wien in their last action of the day, before facing South Korea tomorrow
- Matches are 18-minutes long and involve six-a-side teams at the state-of-the-art indoor complex in the west of Germany
After a 2-0 opening defeat to Schalke at the Glaspalast Sindelfingen in Stuttgart, Trevor Peake’s men roared back from a goal down to see off Norwegian side Rosenborg - courtesy of goals from Kiernan Dewsbuy Hall, Khanya Leshabela and Darnell Johnson.
An unfortunate 2-1 reverse against RB Leipzig, featuring a brilliant effort by Cal Templeton, ruled out the possibility of finishing top of Group A but the young Foxes remain in with a chance of success in the intermediate round.
Featuring six-a-side teams and nine-minute halves, the indoor competition in Baden-Württemberg on the German west border has offered a unique challenge for Peake’s side in front of a raucous crowd and was broadcast live on national television.
Despite a 4-3 loss to holders Rapid Wien late in the day, City know they still stand a chance of success if they are able to plot a route through their fixtures on Saturday, the first of which comes against South Korea U19s.
Group A results:
- Schalke 2 (Hemmerich, Karakas) Leicester City 0
- Leicester City 3 (Dewsbury-Hall, Leshabela, Johnson) Rosenborg 1 (Vinje)
- Leicester City 1 (Templeton) RB Leipzig 2 (Schimmel x2)
Intermediate Round fixtures and results:
- Leicester City 3 (Templeton x2, Dewsbury-Hall) Rapid Wien 4 (Prirsch x2, Sahanek, Kussler)
- Leicester City vs South Korea Under 19s (time TBC on Saturday morning)
Day One:
Schalke were 2-0 victors as City started their Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup campaign with defeat despite an encouraging display at the lively Glaspalast Sindelfingen.
After a spell of relative comfort in possession of the ball, Leicester soon found themselves having to defend as Alex Pascanu headed off his own line to deny Luke Hemmerich an early opener for the Bundesliga club.
Cameron Yates, the Foxes goalkeeper, then made a fantastic low save at his near post from a powerful drive by Nicholas Taigue before Nejamin Goler cut inside Pascanu to forge another opening, dragging it just wide.
Hemmerich, however, was there again to convert the rebound off the back wall, to give an experienced Schalke outfit a one-goal advantage ahead of the break.
Admiral Muskwe, a useful outlet for Steve Beaglehole’s Development Squad this season, almost immediately got City back in it with a speculative long-range effort, but it whistled wide of Timon Moritz Weiner’s top right corner.
After the interval, Peake's men emerged with more intent about their play and looked increasingly familiar with their new surroundings as they hurried Schalke into a series of errors at the back.
First, Muskwe showed a great turn of pace to evade two backtracking defenders before arrowing it narrowly wide. Layton Ndukwu, too, went close minutes later from 15 yards out but his attempt flew just wide of the near post.
Despite City’s industry up front, Johnson was adjudged to have fouled Erdinc Karakas in the area right at the end of play and the Schalke man duly stepped up to send Yates the wrong way. Peake and his young side didn't have to wait long to register their first victory of the day, however, with that early setback being followed by a fine 3-1 triumph against Rosenborg.
After going a goal behind in the first half, scored by Fredrik Vinje, combative midfielder Dewsbury-Hall was the quickest to react to draw City level on the stroke of half-time.
A devastating counter-attack, a trademark of Leicester sides at every level, gave Peake’s men an opportunity to go ahead - one which Leshabela didn't turn down following a through-ball by Dewsbury-Hall at the back.
With Rosenborg hunting for an equaliser in the latter stages, City broke again and an inventive ball by Templeton off the side wall allowed Johnson to slide it past Einar Bergquist. City were unable to build upon that success, though, and missed out on top spot in Group A with a narrow 2-1 reverse against German outfit RB Leipzig in their final preliminary fixture.
Lucas Schmidt went close early on, blazing over from half-way, before Yates had to get a firm hand to Felix Schimmel’s fearsome effort from point blank range within the opening two minutes.
Leipzig’s early pressure eventually told when Mert Yilmaz popped up in the right place at the right time to roll it past Yates and give the Germans a vital lead to protect.
Leicester eventually broke them down, however, with Templeton corkscrewing his body to beat the 'keeper with an excellent strike with his back to goal soon after. Despite City enjoying a flurry of chances to seal a second victory, it was Leipzig who grabbed a late winner when Schimmel broke into space again behind the back-line to drill it beyond Yates into the top of the net.
