Trevor Peake has hailed the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup as a 'great experience', saying several of his Leicester City Under-19s players have grown in confidence over the course of the competition in Stuttgart.
The young Foxes played out one win and three defeats on the opening day in front of a boisterous Glaspalast Sindelfingen crowd and Peake, whose men face South Korea Under-19s in front of a live television audience on Saturday, has been buoyed by their displays.
Despite narrow reverses to Schalke, Leipzig and holders Rapid Wien, courtesy of a victory against Rosenborg, City remain in with a chance of success on the final day in Germany if they can overcome the South Koreans with Peake hoping to see the same industry from his players.
Speaking to LCFC TV in Stuttgart, the Leicester Academy manager, reflecting on the 4-3 defeat to Rapid Wien late on Friday, said: “There were some surprisingly encouraging displays, from players I didn’t expect to have quite as good an impact on the competition.
“We watched what other teams were doing and they changed all five outfield players at half-time. We got in a good position, 3-2 up, and brought five players off the bench, five of our better players - if you can call them that.
“But then we conceded two goals and lost the game which was very disappointing. It is pleasing for us to get on the scoresheet, the goals come a little more frequently at these small arenas.”
City have scored three goals in two of their four matches so far despite this being their first taste of six-a-side, 18-minute matches and Peake says the stature of the competition has helped some of his younger players develop their skills on the ball.
He added: “Some of the finishing was very good, some of the defending, on the other hand, wasn’t up to standard. Some of them have handled it very well.
“Some of them have not noticed the importance of the games they play in – whether its televised or not. We’ve seen a lot of improved play out there which can only be a positive.
“It’s been a great experience to be involved in. We’ve still got Saturday to come, where we’ll be playing at least three games, there’s still time to turn things around.”
