- LCFC Women resume their FA Women's Championship campaign with a home game against Coventry United Ladies On Sunday (1pm kick-off)- The Foxes top the table, three points ahead of second-placed Durham, while Coventry are 10th- Manager Jonathan Morgan spoke the media on Thursday, ahead of the fixture at Farley Way Stadium- He says there is still a lot more work to be done between now and the end of the season, despite City's healthy position
Aiming for an 11th straight victory in the FA Women's Championship, Leicester welcome Coventry United Ladies to Farley Way Stadium on Sunday (1pm kick-off). Two goals from Sam Tierney ensured the Foxes defeated second-place Durham last time out, to open up a three-point lead at the Championship's summit with four games to play. Speaking in Thursday afternoon's virtual pre-match press conference via Zoom, Morgan urged the team to continue the impressive form that has seen City win 13 of the 16 league games played, losing just once and hitting a total of 46 goals.
"Repetition is the only messaged we've delivered in the last two weeks," he told the media. "We're very realistic with what we think we can achieve in the game against Coventry.
"We feel that if we turn up and do our jobs, we're confident we can get three points and push on to the next game. It's just about the girls being professional, which they've shown a lot over the last two weeks.
"It's about making them realise 'let's not undo all the hard work' because the reality is that if we lose to Coventry, we're back to square one with Durham again and it becomes a lot tighter. Because of the size of the league, if you drop points, it makes a big difference for the teams to gain ground."
After the high pressure situation of City's top-of-the-table clash with the Wildcats last time out, Morgan has been keeping spirits high within the camp, aiming to strike the right balance between recovery and concentrating on the task in hand.
Given Coventry's position of 10th in the standings, he believes their situation is likely to galvanise the visitors as they search for crucial points to move them away from the bottom of the table.
"We've been keeping the atmosphere very jovial, very relaxed and calm," he explained, speaking about the mood in training. "We've put extra emphasis on laughter and to keep enjoying ourselves and this moment. We've done lots of little team bonding exercises.
"Training has been good, the tempo and intensity has been really good and everybody is still pushing because they want to play. The competition for places is really high at the moment, which I can only keep utilising to my advantage.
"We focused quite a lot on Coventry's formation and how we are going to play. We've probably been more detailed for this game to keep the girls switched on. They are obviously looking to save themselves from relegation as well.
"This isn't a forgone conclusion, this isn't an easy game, because if Coventry got three points against us, that's a big three points. They are going to want to come and try to do something themselves.
"You cannot ever underestimate the energy levels that can be created when you're in that situation and potentially losing their status in the Championship. Jay [Bradford] has been doing a fantastic job with the resources she's had and I do think she'll keep them up.
"It's just making our players aware that you respect Coventry as an opposition by playing to the best of your ability. If we do that, I think people will have a good day and get the success that they want."
Although the Foxes recorded their biggest-ever margin of victory in the Championship with a 9-1 triumph against the Red and Greens earlier in the campaign, Morgan says that result will count for little come Sunday afternoon, with both teams having plenty to play for at both ends of the table. "It's a completely different situation to the first game now," he admitted. "Coventry are going to be very alert on what they need to do and look to limit any potential damage because they want to pick up the points as well.
"We have to tackle that and they are going to be defensively solid, which we're aware of. From our point of view, it's four games to go but with every game we get that little bit closer to our overall target.
"The girls are not really thinking about anything else but the football. I think once we settle and once the game gets going, we'll still be free-flowing, we'll still play the same style of football and be attacking. As long as we play to our best, I feel confident."
