- LCFC Women head to AMEX Stadium to face Brighton in the WSL on Sunday (2pm GMT kick-off)- Manager Jonathan Morgan points to the top-flight experience in the Seagulls' squad- Morgan is confident the Foxes will start to pick up points in the WSL- Fox Travel remains available for Sunday's fixture, which can be purchased HERE
The Seagulls have incrementally climbed the WSL standings under former England and Team GB manager Hope Powell, leading to a commendable sixth-placed finish last term. The south coast outfit also current sit fourth in the table after winning four of their league matches so far in 2021/22.
City, on the other hand, are still searching for their first points of their debut campaign in the top tier after winning the FA Women's Championship and Morgan, who was speaking at Belvoir Drive on Thursday, expects another significant challenge for the squad in Falmer on Sunday.
“Hope [Powell] is a fantastic manager,” Morgan told the national media during his pre-match press conference. “She has been at the top level with England and done so much in the women’s game and I have got so much respect for her. Her experience and knowledge is unbelievable.
“Hope has implemented her culture and philosophy. She’s been at Brighton now for a few years and she has finally found that system that is right for her, as you can see in the results and it’s taken a few years for them to grow to that.
“We’re just at our infancy stage at this level. It’s going to be a tough test. She has got them very well organised and playing a certain way that is definitely suiting Brighton. It’s good football that they are playing.
“She has kept a number of players who have significant WSL experience, you can see that has now blended nicely for them this season and they are a competitive WSL outfit. On top of that, she has got them all on the same page.
“They are a very systematic team, but they are very good at what they do. That’s what we’ve got to prevent on Sunday.”
The Foxes go into the clash on the back of a 4-1 reverse to three-time Vitality Women's FA Cup and Continental Tyres League Cup winners Manchester City at King Power Stadium last weekend. Morgan, though, can see signs that Leicester are adapting to the challenges of the WSL.
“It’s only a matter of time before we pick up those points, everyone here believes it and feels very positive regarding that,” he added.
“We’ve worked on what we need to work on and we’re just going to go out and take the game to them and just like we do in every game, look to hopefully pick up some points.
“We are almost there, we are close. We’ve seen such an improvement from the first game of the season to now. The girls are putting so much effort in. Results aren’t showing that but with the energy levels within our environment, it feels like it’s just around the corner.
“The girls are putting everything into practice and they are growing in their experience. That mentality is rapidly changing.”
Former Manchester United striker Jess Sigsworth opened her account in the defeat by Man City on Filbert Way, while shot-stopper Kirstie Levell continues to earn acclaim for her performances in goal, and Morgan is hopeful that more players can exhibit their qualities over the weeks to come.
“We’ve got to be perfect out of possession, understand what each individual job role is and what everyone’s responsibility is within the team and make sure we make no individual errors against Brighton,” the LCFC Women manager continued.
“That’s where we are losing games at the minute, the girls know that. In possession, our attack has got a lot better over the last few weeks, but we’re just waiting for it to just all click in front of goal and hopefully Jess Sigsworth can kick on after getting that goal against Manchester City.
“When you look at what she (Kirstie Levell) is doing, she’s the most in-form ‘keeper at this moment. The stats show that she’s no.1 for a number of things in the WSL at the minute. It shows how good she is.
“Kirstie is a humble character and she’s not letting everything get to her because she’s coming back and putting in performance after performance. While she’s been fantastic, we want Kirstie to have a relaxing day at the office.”
