After retaining top spot in the FA Women's Championship over Christmas, LCFC Women manager Jonathan Morgan expressed his pride following a fifth consecutive league win on Sunday.
- LCFC Women secured a fifth win in a row at Blackburn Rovers on Sunday afternoon- The Foxes sit atop of the FA Women's Championship at Christmas- Manager Jonathan Morgan praised City's players for defying testing circumstances with regular performances- Morgan also details why he believes Leicester can be even better in 2021
That 3-2 success at Blackburn Rovers, courtesy of a Natasha Flint brace and Kayleigh McDonald's own goal, followed earlier victories over Lewes, Coventry United, London Bees and Charlton Athletic.
Having also qualified for the quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres League Cup, where they will face Championship outfit Crystal Palace, Morgan couldn't have been happier in his post-match assessment.
"The girls are so proud of themselves," he told LCFC TV at Sir Tom Finney Stadium. "It’s been a very, very difficult year for everybody, but from this, as the football family goes, it gives them a little boost.
"It’s something positive to hold onto over Christmas. From the London City game (City's last defeat), we’ve really regrouped and galvanised. We’ve understood where our weaknesses were.
"It came at a very good time for us and to get five wins on the bounce, 15 points, when title rivals have been dropping points in that period, it’s been great.
"Blackburn’s a really good testament to that. Their last three games, against Sheffield United, Liverpool and Durham, they drew all three of them.
"For us to get maximum points from them was brilliant. We can only look at that as a positive and hopefully we start the New Year with the same form."
With heavy rainfall at times against a tough opponent, the Foxes battled through to secure their eighth league victory in 11 outings this season, but Morgan believes they can improve even further.
"It was a good performance," he continued. "Blackburn came out and they pressed us in certain spells of the game, which made it tricky for us.
"I thought the girls were fantastic throughout in difficult conditions today. They made sure they did their job. They were clinical in possession, but I felt we could be a bit better.
"Some of the play was lovely and you could see it allowed us to create the space where we anticipated for the girls and the only disappointment is that we didn’t take a few more chances.
"I think we can be better, funnily enough. We’re top of the league, by one point, and Durham have been fantastic. We’ve dropped some soft points over the course of the first half.
"I think that was down to settling and gelling as we brought a lot of players in, but we’re starting to see the rewards of that. Overall, we’re very, very pleased.
"I’ve said to the girls that I’m extremely proud of them because the resilience they’ve shown this year, with COVID-19, to come out on top has been absolutely brilliant."
