The Foxes have enjoyed a magnificent start to the new campaign under Steve Beaglehole and go into this week’s encounter at Oakwell on the back of a 1-0 success at Carlisle United. That Checkatrade Trophy victory was their fifth of the new campaign and means City have a chance of progression in every cup competition entered so far, including the Premier League International Cup.
Ahead of their trip to Barnsley, here are five things you need to know…
Last time out
Layton Ndukwu struck as City registered a brilliant 1-0 success at Carlisle United in the Checkatrade Trophy last week.
City were without internationals Alex Pascanu, George Thomas, Daniel Iversen and Darnell Johnson while the Sky Bet League 2 side made eight changes from their 1-0 win at Crawley.
Despite a gulf in experience between the two sides, however, it was the Foxes who dominated proceedings and Ndukwu’s 19th minute strike sealed the victory at Brunton Park.
Beaglehole’s preview
On City’s opening few weeks, manager Beaglehole said: “Last year, we played six games and we didn’t get a point. We’ve got 10 now (in PL2) and it perhaps could have been more.
“It’s a good start but it’s only a start. We would love to get virtually safe by January. We would like some of the lads to go out on loan, but we also want to stay in the top tier.
“As staff, we will be talking about many of the players getting to play league football on a regular basis.”
Barnsley in focus
The Tykes’ youngsters played out a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Friday afternoon.
Cameron McGeehan scored a superb opener for Paul Harsley’s side in the first half before Warren Clarke levelled during the second period for Wednesday.
The hosts needed to rely on the form of goalkeeper Nick Townsend between the posts, who managed to keep Wednesday at bay on a number of occasions.
Ndukwu on target
A useful source of goals for the Foxes last term, Ndukwu opened his account for Beaglehole’s men last week with a tidy finish at Carlise.
“We are a young side but we have been working hard tactically on the training field and tonight it paid off so it’s a great result,” he told LCFC TV.
“All the lads did well today. We have got a lot of momentum as well. Hopefully we can take this into the league. It’s just about maintaining it now.”
Busy week ahead
Following Tuesday’s clash, City have a quick turnaround for a trip to the capital to face Tottenham on Hotspur Way on Friday (1pm kick-off).
So far in PL2, Leicester have tasted success on three occasions, over Everton (1-0), West Ham United (3-1) and Chelsea (2-0).
On Monday 23 October, the Foxes then welcome Swansea City to Holmes Park (7pm kick-off).
