Ben Petty was thrilled with the Leicester City Development Squad after putting in one of their best performances of the season away to West Ham United in the Premier League Cup on Thursday night.
The Under-23s were cruelly denied all three points by a late equaliser from Nathan Holland after Admiral Muskwe scored twice in the first-half either side of a Declan Rice effort in the 10th minute for the hosts in Dagenham.
The result leaves City bottom of Group E with two points to their name ahead of an away double-header against leaders Brighton and Hove Albion and third-place Nottingham Forest over the course of the next month.
“We’re delighted with the display tonight, three days after the Southampton game,” assistant coach Petty told LCFC TV. “The lads have put a massive effort in but that’s football and it’s a good lesson for the lads.
“Delighted for Ade [Muskwe] to score two goals, we think he’s developed well over the last few months. Again, as a unit, we talked about them staying together and I think anyone at the game tonight saw a real team effort.
“We were more aggressive with the press, we wanted to press their back four because we knew they pass it around at the back. Ade has seized upon two loose balls. In the second half we perhaps didn’t get high enough.
“The back four have all put in really manful display. I thought Matty Miles did a great job in front of the back four and the forward lads worked for the team as well.”
Evaluating City’s chances of reaching the knock-out rounds, Petty admits it will be an uphill struggle but says he remains confident of picking up results against Brighton and Forest over the coming weeks.
He continued: “We want to try and finish with two wins and keep the group together. They’re in good spirits and starting to get a bit more belief.”
