- Leicester City head to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon for their final away game of the season (4pm kick-off)- Brendan Rodgers was delighted with his team's performance in a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United- He also praised the contribution of captain Wes Morgan, who played 90 minutes on Thursday- The Northern Irishman wants to see more of the same when his side travel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend
City currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, and could move up one place with a positive result in the clash with Spurs - a match you can listen to live on LCFC Radio.
Rodgers’ side returned to form with an impressive 2-0 victory over Sheffield United at King Power Stadium on Thursday, thanks to goals from Ayoze Pérez and Demarai Gray.
That result sealed European football for the 2020/21 season, but Rodgers revealed to the national and international media on Friday morning that he is targeting more success before the end of the current campaign, as they prepare to travel to north London this weekend.
“We set goals that we wanted to achieve but it’s about our standard and we dropped well below that against Bournemouth,” City’s manager said in his pre-match press conference.
“But if you look at the performance last night (versus Sheffield United) playing against a team coming in off the back of three outstanding results, in particular against Tottenham and Chelsea, with their performance level so high.
“For us to then dominate the way we did, both physically and in our football, that brought us back to the level that we’ve been playing at for most of the season.
"The players showed all those values that we want to see in our team and when they do that, we can play to a really high level.
“We can now give everything and play with freedom. Our target at the beginning of the season was: could we bring Leicester City into Europe in my time here?
"I always felt that was going to be the challenge, but for the players to do it with two games to go is absolutely superb.
“However, we have an opportunity to achieve even more and we’re going to give it absolutely everything to do that. If we keep the standard that we had last night in terms of our intensity and mentality in the game, then we know we’ll have as good of a chance as anyone.”
Rodgers also praised the contribution of club captain Morgan, who came into the starting XI on Thursday in place of the suspended Çağlar Söyüncü.
Alongside debutant Luke Thomas, he helped steer City to a fourth consecutive home clean sheet in the league.
The centre-back was one of three experienced players to sign a new one-year contract earlier this year, and his performance against the Blades demonstrated his importance, according to Rodgers.
“I think his performance last night showed the trust and the faith that I have in him,” the Northern Irishman added.
“People might have thought ‘oh he’s 36 and we’ll just give him another season on the back of being here and being a legend’ - not at all.
“I feel that he’s got great worth to this squad of players and the Football Club. His behaviour every single day is really inspirational, especially for the younger players, how he carries himself.
“But also you see it is testament to his work. I know and I feel that, especially going into a season with European football, you need that experience, you need those experienced bodies as well as having all the young players.
“His performance last night, he was absolutely brilliant, a colossal performance from a guy that’s working so hard every day and is ready for you when needed. I’m absolutely delighted he’s got another year.”
