- Leicester City secured a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday- Manager Brendan Rodgers highlighted the defensive qualities on show from the Foxes- James Maddison and Harvey Barnes struck to send City on their way to victory- Rodgers also pointed out the performance of Ricardo Pereira in a more advanced role
While James Maddison and Harvey Barnes claimed the headlines with strikes in the first half, Bertrand Traoré's 48th-minute effort for Villa pointed the spotlight on City's defenders in the second period.
Nevertheless, the Foxes remained resolute to frustrate Dean Smith's home side and they were able to hold out for Leicester's ninth away win of the season - only the third time the Club has achieved that feat in the top-flight.
In the latter moments, Timothy Castagne, Jonny Evans, Çağlar Söyüncü and Luke Thomas stood tall to keep Villa at bay, assisted manfully by substitutes Daniel Amartey, Hamza Choudhury and Papy Mendy.
"We defended really well," Rodgers told LCFC TV in his post-match debrief. "We had a back four and then, for the last period, we went to a back five because we knew lots of crosses were going to come in.
"Jonny and Çağs, in particular, are outstanding at crosses and, in the end, Kasper [Schmeichel] didn’t have too much to do."
Ricardo Pereira, on the other hand, was deployed in a more advanced role and Rodgers was pleased with the impact the Portugal international had on the outcome of the game in the West Midlands.
"He’s a player that can play there," the Northern Irishman added. "I think the dynamic (with Castagne) worked really well for us, you could see that in the first half. He’s flexible, he can be outside, he can be inside.
"You can then penetrate outside him and also they can cover for each other as well. They both know the role.
"He’s played that position before, so it gives us a greater creativity in our attacking play and, on the inside, he’s comfortable, when he moves in. He works very hard."
