- Leicester City fell to a 1-0 defeat by Zorya Luhansk in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday- Brendan Rodgers believes there are many positives to take, despite the frustration felt at full-time- The Northern Irishman highlighted the efforts of his young players in particular- City's medical team will also assess the condition of Çağlar Söyüncü, who withdrew in the first half
The Foxes went close on several occasions in Zaporizhzhia, through the likes of Harvey Barnes and Cengiz Ünder, but a strike from Allahyar Sayyadmanesh in the 84th minute sealed three points for Zorya. Rodgers was able to name the likes of Çağlar Söyüncü, Ricardo Pereira and Wilfred Ndidi in his starting XI for the clash and, despite defeat, City remain in pole position in their efforts to win Group G. Midway through the first half, however, Söyüncü was forced to withdraw with injury, and the Northern Irishman says his condition will be assessed by the Club's medical team this week.
Reflecting on the game overall, the Foxes manager told LCFC TV at full-time: "The players gave everything to the game. "We said before that this was going to be about the desire to win and I think you could see from the players, even though we had qualified, we came here with a real determination and focus to win.
"There are positives for us. Players were getting game time that are coming back from injury. We, obviously, have to see how Çağs is, but the likes of Ricky and Wilf got game time too."
The 47-year-old was also enthused by the performances of some of his younger players and, while clearly frustrated with the result, he says several positives can be drawn from the experience.
"I thought our young players were excellent," he continued. "The likes of Hamza [Choudhury] were very good, Dennis [Praet] was very good midfield, JJ (James Justin) as well. "We had lots of good performers on the evening – and Cengo (Ünder) as well – I think he was outstanding with his quality, so it’s just disappointing.
"We put so much into the game, so to lose it, I real feel for them."
