- Leicester City host Newport County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday (7:45pm kick-off)- Full-back Luke Thomas says the Foxes have to be on top of their game in the third-round tie- Newport beat City in the Emirates FA Cup in January 2019- The Sky Bet League 2 side are currently 18th in the fourth tier
The Academy graduate, who lifted the Emirates FA Cup with the Foxes in 2021, could feature in Tuesday's Carabao Cup tie at King Power Stadium. City host Sky Bet League 2 outfit Newport in a 7:45pm kick-off - hoping to continue their bid to win the trophy for the fourth time. In a fixture which is also Leicester's last home outing before the winter FIFA World Cup break, Thomas, 21, is hopeful that Brendan Rodgers' men can sign off with a victory. They then head to London Stadium on Saturday to tackle West Ham United in the Premier League (3pm kick-off). "We know it’s going to be a challenge," Thomas told LCFC TV, speaking in Seagrave this week. "It’s going to be a physical battle with a League 2 side coming to us. It’s never going to be an easy game. "It’s about not getting complacent really, playing our own game, and hopefully playing to a good level. Hopefully we can win the game and get through to the next round.
"We want to go out on a high and give the fans a good performance at home. They’re obviously not going to see us again for another six weeks, so hopefully we can go out there and put on a performance for them."
City know all too well about Newport having lost to the south Wales side in the FA Cup during the 2018/19 season. Plenty of time has passed since those days, however, and Thomas is optimistic that Leicester can secure safe passage into the fourth round of the competition.
"I remember watching that game," he recalled. "It was obviously at their place, which is a tough place to go. I’ve been there in the [EFL Trophy]. We know it’s going to be a tough game. We know they’re going to have set-plays.
"We’ve seen the throw-ins they’ve got, the corners they’ve got, and they’ve got big players. We’ll have to deal with that on the day. I don’t think you can underestimate any team in the cup. They’re going to be wanting to get into the next round as well.
"It would be history for them if they can come to our place and beat us. We know they’re going to up for it. We’ve got to be as well. In the past few weeks, we’ve shown our real qualities again. We’ve got back into that mindset and we’re playing good football at the moment, getting the results that we want.
"Hopefully we can continue that against Newport and at the weekend and finish on a high."
