- Sam Tierney sits down to speak to LCFC TV upon arriving back to Belvoir Drive for pre-season fitness testing- The players all met up for the first time since the promotion-winning campaign on Wednesday- Tierney says attention is now all on delivering in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League- Being able to play in front of the Foxes fans for the first time would be a special moment, the defender adds
With the new season kicking off in early September, the players returned for fitness testing at Belvoir Drive on Wednesday, before pre-season training begins early next week.
The centre-back says the squad are well aware of the challenges they will face during the upcoming season, which will be a historic maiden outing in the top division of women’s football.
“It’s been nice to have a break, or as much of one as we could get in the current climate, but it was well deserved and well earned,” the 22-year-old revealed to LCFC TV. “It was a fantastic year for us last year, but I think more importantly, just mentally resetting ourselves.
“It’s going to be a very tough year this year and one that’s going to present different challenges. But I think we’re all looking forward to it so hopefully we can come back in, be in good shape and really push on from there.
“Obviously there’s excitement but focused more so. That’s where we all said we wanted to be, it’s been our ambitions for a while, but we’re all realistic.
“We obviously need to sit down as a group, set targets, see where we stand and just really start to push on and work hard because I think that’s going to be the key this year, we need to work hard in every aspect.”
While Tierney was one of nine players to have recently signed new deals at the Club, there were also several summer departures, as manager Jonathan Morgan shapes the squad for the 2021/22 season.
The defender continued: “It’s football and getting to the level we want to be at, we identified that naturally things had to change and I’d like to thank the players we had last year, it was a big squad effort that we had and we all played our part.
“But naturally things change, so hopefully we can build on the areas we looked at needing to build on and more importantly, bring some experience for the league that we’re going into, because we need that and hopefully put us in a better position to take the league with both hands.”
The former Sheffield United player made a total of 25 appearances during her debut season as a Fox, featuring in 19 league games as City stormed to the FA Women’s Championship title.
Tierney will always cherish those moments from the title triumph but is now focused on the future and what lies ahead in the WSL, potentially with supporters able to cheer them on and enjoy the action in person.
“I can’t lie, I’ve probably looked back through my camera roll a good few times now,” she added. “And that’s the reason you play football, you play sport, to have those highs.
“We do want to make the same memories, obviously it would be fantastic to do that in front of fans hopefully and share those experiences with them.
“But again, just remaining grounded and understanding that for the highs that we’re going to have, there will be some lows and we might not be as used to that last year, but that’s something we have to learn and take on board this year.”
