_- Sam Tierney spoke to LCFC TV after her two goals ensured LCFC Women triumphed at Durham Women- City's 2-0 win at Maiden Castle Sports Park was a reward for their hard work, she believes_- Tierney also credited the Foxes' set-piece delivery and quality from wide areas - The result establishes a three point gap between Leicester and Durham at the top of the table
With the scores locked at 0-0 going into the break, Tierney came to the fore with two goals inside the first 15 minutes of the second half and established a lead that the visitors were able to hold on to. Inflicting a first defeat of the season on the Wildcats, who now sit three points behind leaders Leicester in the FA Women's Championship standings, was a major result with four games remaining. Tierney gave praise to the whole team for producing an accomplished performance in what was a high stakes, top-of-the-table clash at Maiden Castle Sports Park. "I think there was a lot of pressure surrounding this game, everyone knew that," the Sheffield-born defender told LCFC TV after the game. "Even within the league, these are the sort of games that get hyped up. "We knew that as a team, so you've seen a little bit in the first half, it was closely matched, it was rough, it wasn't nice football but we knew going into this game that it was never going to be nice.
"In the first half, the message for us was to stay in the game. We know how Durham like to play, they like to get an early goal and sit back in. And credit to them, it's worked this season.
"Out here, it's really open, the wind was a really big factor and it was against us in the first half, so we got into the changing rooms and we said that was the first milestone done and, from here with the wind with us, we'll see where it takes us."
The 22-year-old's acrobatic right-footed volley from Lachante Paul's knockdown handed City the perfect start to the second half, coming just 70 seconds after the restart. Tierney was just as pleased with the clean sheet - a third on the bounce in the league - achieved by restricting the hosts to minimal chances in front of goal.
"I don't think any of us expected to score so early but I think it helped us," she said, reflecting on the opener. "It settled the nerves a bit and I think it just shook them a little bit and allowed us to play a bit more and get a foothold in the game really.
"To be honest, I'll have to watch it back because it was all a bit of a blur. I think one minute I'm looking at Lachante, the ball came off her and I'm just sliding it into the net.
"It was massive, we knew we'd have the chances, but it was just about putting them away and, from there, we looked stronger and stronger as we grew into the game and it was about managing the game.
"I think that's probably even more important than the goals I've scored. Once you get that foothold, to manage a game against a tough team like that, it's hard but I think we did it well."
Her second came from a superb free-kick from Charlie Devlin, who picked out City's No.3 at the back post to head home on the hour mark and seal a vital three points for the travelling Foxes. "We've got players with that quality in this team," Tierney added. "Loads of us have gone close, I've gone close, [Ashleigh Plumptre] has gone close, but I said to Charlie after, it's about the delivery. "It puts it on a plate for me and, if I'm missing that, then I think the gaffer is having a go at me, but the quality is there throughout the team. It was a shame for us to lose Remi [Allen] (to injury) but I think everyone stepped it up that extra 10 per cent."
